DAYTON, OHIO (March 1) -- Miami University's baseball team captured its second win of
the season, holding off a late rally to defeat area-rival Dayton, 4-3,
Wednesday at Stuart Field. The RedHawks (2-0) gave the Flyers their first
loss in the 2000 campaign and now lead the series between the two schools
85-31-1.
With two outs and runners on first and second in the bottom of the ninth
inning, junior reliever Matt Allen (Carmel, Calif./Carmel), who was
credited with his first save of the year, gave up an RBI-single to Andy
Boehmer that scored pinch-runner Nate Winkelfoos. On the play, however, junior
Clark Mace (London, Ohio/Madison Plains) fielded the single and threw out
Mark Schulte, who tried to advance to third, to end the game.
"Clark made a good play on the ball," said head coach Tracy Smith. "It was
a hard-fought game and it is nice to come away with a win."
Junior hurler Nate Tekavec (Concord, Ohio/Riverside) picked up the win
going six innings, giving up three hits and two runs while striking out
seven Flyer batters. On two occasions, Tekavec worked himself out of a
bases-loaded jam, giving up no runs the first time and one the second.
"Nate did a good job of setting the tone of the game for us," said Smith.
"He threw strikes and kept their hitters off-balance."
Mace went 2-for-4 at the plate, including his second home run of the
season. Junior Brady Nori (Middletown, Ohio/Middletown) added two hits for
the Hawks and a stolen base.
Jason McFarland suffered the loss on the mound for Dayton (1-3). Brooks
Vogel connected for his fourth homer on the season in the second inning.
Miami next takes to the field this weekend against the University of
Arkansas. The 'Hawks travel to Fayetteville for a three-game series on
March 3, 4 and 5.
