OXFORD, Ohio -- Paced by its second-straight 14-run offensive explosion, Miami University's baseball team blasted Ohio Wesleyan University at Stanley G. McKie Field Sunday afternoon (Feb. 25). The victory secured a RedHawk sweep of its season-opening homestand following Saturday's 14-11 defeat of Ohio Dominican.
Junior third baseman Jason Knoedler (Springfield, Ill./Springfield) led Miami offensively with a 4-for-6, three-run performance, including his second home run of the season. Overall, the Red and White collected 16 hits from nine different batters and eight RedHawks had at least one RBI.
Junior right-hander Billy Kieninger (Xenia, Ohio/Xenia) scattered six hits over five innings, allowing no earned runs, to pick up his first victory of the season.
Miami took the lead when Knoedler led off the RedHawk half of the first with his solo blast. The Red and White then added three more runs in the first frame to take a 4-0 lead.
After Miami added another run in the second, it broke the game open in the bottom of the fourth with seven scores to take a commanding 12-0 lead. Senior centerfielder Clark Mace (London, Ohio/Madison Plains) highlighted the inning with a two-run homer.
With the victory, Miami moved to 2-3 for the season. The RedHawks return to action next weekend with a three-game round-robin tournament at the University of Evansville. Miami opens against the host Purple Aces Friday at 2:30 p.m.
