TUSCALOOSA, Ala. (Feb. 17) -- Miami University's baseball team dropped a pair of games Saturday afternoon at the University of Alabama, falling in the opener 13-2 before losing a heartbreaker 2-1 in the nightcap.
Alabama won the opener with a pair of six-run innings, 13-2. Beau Hearod was the hitting star for Alabama with two hits and six RBI, including his first career grand slam.
Miami (0-2) committed five errors in game two, including two crucial errors in the fatal ninth inning. Brent Boyd reached on a two-out error by third baseman Andi Scheidt. Boyd then stole second and Aaron Clark was intentionally walked by losing pitcher Matt Allen (0-1) to load the bases.
Allen got a pop up off the bat of Jeremy Brown but Miami shortstop Jeremy Ison dropped the ball, allowing Casey Lambert to score with the winning run. Allen allowed one unearned run and walked two batters in 2/3 of an inning.
He relieved starter Chris Leonard, who kept Alabama in check through eight innings. The lefty, a freshman All-American last year, worked eight innings allowing one run and six hits. He walked four and fanned eight.
Alabama starter Lance Cormier matched Leonard inning-for-inning and allowed his team to win the game on the ninth. Cormier, who tossed his second straight complete game, allowed one unearned run and seven hits. He added six strikeouts and walked none.
In the nightcap, Miami plated an unearned run off starter Lance Cormier for a 1-0 lead in the second inning. Justin Knoedler opened the inning with a single to center, stole second and advanced to third on Andi Scheidt's infield hit. Third-baseman Beau Hearod then fielded the ball and threw wild to first, allowing Knoedler to score on the play.
After stranding six base runners in the first four innings, including five in scoring position, Alabama tied the game in the bottom of the fifth inning. Casey Lambert laced a lead off triple just past the diving Jason Knoedler in center field. Peter Stonard followed with an RBI single to right, tying the game at 1-1.
In game one, Miami allowed six runs in the second and seventh innings for a disappointing 13-2 setback.
Alabama jumped out to a quick 6-0 lead with six runs on five hits in the second inning of starter and loser Billy Kieninger (0-1). Aaron Clark led off with his third home run of the year, a solo shot to right field. The Crimson Tide then loaded the bases with a walk to Jeremy Brown, a single to right by Scott McClanahan and a hit by pitch by Grant Redding.
Kavonski Chatman drew a bases loaded walk to force in Brown from third and give the Crimson Tide a 2-0 lead. Beau Hearod followed with a two-run double into the right-center field gap, scoring Brown and McClanahan. Peter Stonard's two-run single scored Redding and Chatman to give Alabama a 5-0 lead. Brent Boyd capped the six-run inning with a base hit to left field, scoring Hearod for the 6-0 lead.
Kieninger (0-1) lasted five innings for Miami, allowing seven runs on seven hits. He walked five, struck out one and hit one batter.
Alabama scored an unearned run on the third inning as Clark walked, advanced to third on Brown's single and scored on an error by shortstop Jeremy Ison.
Miami scored its only two runs of the game of Alabama's ace left-hander Mark Carter in the sixth inning. The RedHawks put two runs on the board with two outs when Jason Knoedler lined a two-run homer down the left field line.
Carter (1-0) went the distance for the Crimson Tide in his second career start, allowing two runs and seven hits. He struck out six and walked one batter. Carter faced the minimum through the first five innings and at one point retired 10 straight RedHawk batters.
Alabama put six more runs on the board in the bottom of the seventh inning to take a 13-2 lead. Boyd opened the inning with single to center and scored on Clark's triple off the top of the right-center field wall. Jeremy Brown was hit by pitch and McClanahan followed with a bunt single to first, scoring Clark from third.
After Grant Redding struck out and Nate Rogers was hit a pitch, Hearod cranked his first career grand slam that cleared the left field scoreboard.
Miami and Alabama conclude their three-game series with 1 p.m. game Sunday
at Sewell-Thomas Stadium.
