OXFORD, Ohio -
The Miami University baseball team kicked off its annual Red & White Series Friday evening at McKie Field at Hayden Park with the Red Team taking game one of the best-of-five series, 3-1. Each game of the series is a seven-inning contest.
Freshman starting hurler Brooks Fiala (Carmel, Ind.) did it all for the Red Team (1-0), tossing three innings of one-run ball with a trio of strikeouts to earn the win on the hill. He also went 2-for-3 at the plate, drove in the tying run, stole a base and scored the go-ahead run. Sophomore right-hander Matt Rosinski (University Heights, Ohio) took the loss for White (0-1), allowing a pair of runs in three innings of work.
The White Team jumped out to a 1-0 lead in the bottom of the first inning when sophomore Ryan Brenner (Kirtland, Ohio) scored from second on an RBI groundout by freshman Kevin Bower (Indianapolis, Ind.). The lead didn’t last long however, as a Fiala single drove in junior Bryce Redeker (Watseka, Ill.) to even the score. Fiala then put Red on top, 2-1, when he came around on junior Kyle Weldon’s (Mason, Ohio) single to center.
Redeker then padded the Red Team’s lead with a solo blast over the left-field wall in the top of the fourth. Meanwhile, redshirt sophomores Chris Gutschenritter (Atlanta, Ga.) and Ryan Campbell (Cincinnati, Ohio) combined to throw three innings of scoreless baseball for Red to keep the White Team at bay.
“Pitching was the thing I was most impressed with,” said Jeremy Ison, head coach of the Red Team and Miami assistant coach. “I told the guys that we were a bit sloppy in the field, we swung the bats well, but the pitchers stepped up. There’ll be days when they’re not good and the infielders will pick them up, but today guys that are normally steady were kicking the ball around a bit. The pitchers just kept making good pitches.”
Sophomore righty
Joe Neff (Carmel, Ind.) came in for Red in the seventh and pitched a perfect frame to record the save and preserve the win. Sophomore
Mitchell Reilly (Cincinnati, Ohio) and freshman Brandon Adkins (Ona, W.Va.) each pitched a scoreless inning for the White Team, as well.
Red out-hit White, 6-4, for the game as Fiala and Weldon both recorded a pair of hits while Redeker crossed home twice. The White Team stranded nine runners on base in the loss.
The RedHawks continue their intrasquad series Saturday at 6 p.m. at McKie Field at Hayden Park where White will look to even the series at one game each. The final three games of the series will be played next Thursday through Saturday.
