Final Stats

COLUMBUS, Ohio - Playing in Ohio State's Bill Davis Stadium for the first time in four years the Miami University (24-23) baseball team dropped an 11-2 contest to the Buckeyes Wednesday afternoon. The Buckeyes improved to 29-15-1 overall this year and 24-13 against the Red and White by scoring in seven of the eight innings they batted in.

Miami looked like it would get off to a quick start when junior David Cook (Columbus, Ohio/St. Francis DeSales) ripped a single up the middle to lead off the contest, and extend his hitting streak to 13 games. However, OSU hurler Matt Davis got the old "strike 'em out, throw 'em out" combination to get out of the inning.

In the bottom of half of the first Ohio State didn't take long as Christian Snavely opened with a two-bagger to left field, followed by a Brett Garrard base on balls. Sophomore pitcher Chad Reineke (Defiance, Ohio/Ayersville) sat down the next Buckeyes' batter with a strike out, but allowed Snavely to cross the plate when Nick Swisher snaked a double to left-center field. Ohio State tallied its second run of the frame when Doug Dendinger grounded out to first base, recording the RBI when Garrard scored from third.

One more run in the second inning off Reineke, and one run in the third off sophomore Justin Farina (Sarnia, Ontario/St. Christopher's) increased Ohio State's advantage to 4-0. The Buckeyes rattled off one more run in the fifth frame before Miami managed to score its first run. Despite allowing two runs, Farina pitched well allowing only three hits in three innings of work.

The RedHawks finally scratched the scoreboard in the sixth inning when junior Michael Carlin (Pittsburgh, Pa./Mt. Lebanon) opened the stanza with a single through the left side. Sophomore Ryan Edginton (Chester Springs, Pa./Arizona State) pushed Carlin over two second with a single of his own through the left side. After a fly out to right field slid Carlin over the third base, junior Zach Schmidt (Cincinnati, Ohio/McNicholas) hit a sacrifice fly to right field to plate Carlin for the RedHawks first run, and cut OSU's lead to 5-1.

Two Buckeyes' home run in the bottom of the sixth stanza upped their lead to 8-1, and two more in the seventh brought the RedHawks' deficit to 10-1.

Miami managed its second run of the ballgame when Carlin led off successfully in the eighth inning with a double down the left-field line. Carlin advanced to third when Edginton grounded out to second base, and crossed the dish for the second time when junior Andi Scheidt (Cincinnati, Ohio/LaSalle) flew out sacrificially to left field.

One more run in the bottom of the eighth frame put the cap on an 11-2 win for the Buckeyes, as starter Davis improves his record to 4-0. Credited with the loss for Miami is Reineke who falls to 1-2.

The RedHawks return to conference action this weekend when they travel to Akron for a Mid-American Conference series starting on Friday, May 10.
