Box Score

OXFORD, Ohio - Behind junior Graham Taylor's (Villa Hills, Ky.) first complete game of the season, the Miami University RedHawks (30-13, 11-3 MAC) took game two of a three-game series with the Bowling Green State Falcons by a score of 6-1 on Saturday afternoon. The victory, combined with Western Michigan's 4-2 loss to Central Michigan, puts Miami in first place in the Mid-American Conference. The Broncos are now 11-4 in MAC play.

Miami took a 1-0 lead in the bottom of the third on sophomore Brandon Hillier's (Hinsdale, Ill.) run-scoring infield single. Sophomore Ryne Robinson (Toledo, Ohio) tripled to left centerfield with one out and scored when Hillier beat out a groundball to shortstop.

With runners on first and second and two outs in the top of the sixth, Kurt Wells singled through the left side of the infield for Bowling Green, tying the game 1-1. It was the first earned run that Miami starting pitcher Graham Taylor (Villa Hills, Ky.) had surrendered in 14.2 innings, dating back to April 16 versus Buffalo.

Junior Jason Brown (Fairfield, Ohio) got that run back for Miami in the home half of the sixth, giving the RedHawks a 2-1 lead. With senior Brian Canada (Fishers, Ind.) on third base, Brown laced a single through the left side of the infield that gave Taylor a lead he would not relinquish.

Miami made it 3-1 when senior Paul Frietch (Cincinnati, Ohio) drew a bases loaded walk that brought Hillier into score. The next batter, junior Geoff Orr (Orland Park, Ill.), rolled a fielder's choice groundball to shortstop that scored senior John Slone (Cincinnati, Ohio) from third, making the sore 4-1. With junior Jon Franzese (Barrington, Ill.) at the plate and two outs, Orr broke for second and got in a rundown that gave Canada time to scamper home with Miami's fifth run.

Junior shortstop Eric Radley (Hermitage, Tenn.) drove in Brown from second base with a single to rightfield in the bottom of the eighth to make it 6-1 for the Red and White.

Taylor retired the Falcons in order in the ninth to move his record to 4-0 on the season. Taylor allowed just five hits and fanned two batters while dropping his earned run average to 2.96.

Miami collected nine hits in the game, led by Hillier, Slone and Radley, who each collected two hits. With the two hits, Hillier extended his hitting streak to a season-best 13 games.

Freshman righthander John Ely (Homewood, Ill.) takes the mound for Miami in the rubber match of the three-game series on Sunday afternoon at 1 p.m.

Notes: Miami is hitting .303 as a team while its opponents are hitting a mere .244 ... Miami has now won 30 or more games in eight straight years.
