OXFORD, Ohio - Miami University's baseball team dropped the opening game of its Saturday twin bill against the Akron Zips, 16-8, in Mid-American Conference action Saturday afternoon. Akron (21-18; 6-7 MAC) scored 16 runs on 17 hits, while Miami (16-29; 6-13 MAC) scored eight runs on 10 hits in defeat.

Akron jumped ahead of the RedHawks with two runs in the first inning, before scoring three runs in the third inning and one run in the fifth inning to take a 6-0 lead.

The RedHawks struck back with five runs in the fifth inning. Junior J.D. Mynhier was hit by a pitch to start things off, before moving to second base on a four-pitch walk by freshman Kyle Weldon. Junior Eric Darlage delivered the RedHawks' first run of the day with a RBI single up the middle scoring Mynhier and advancing Weldon to second base. A bloop single by freshman Jon Edgington loaded the bases, before the RedHawks scored their second run of the inning as Weldon scored on a sacrifice fly by freshman Adam Eaton. Junior Jordan Petraitis re-loaded the bases with an infield single, allowing a fielder's choice off the bat of junior Chris Nadeau to score Darlage and place runners on the corners with two outs. During Miami's next at-bat, junior Tommy Nurre hit a high infield pop up to second base that was dropped, allowing Edgington and Nadeau to score and close the RedHawks within one run, 6-5.

Akron countered with two runs in the top of the sixth inning, but Miami tacked on another run in the sixth making the score 8-6 in Akron's favor. Mynhier doubled to lead things off and three batters later, Mynhier scored on a throwing error, cutting the deficit to two runs.

However, the Zips added four runs off of three hits in the seventh to regain its six-run lead, 12-6.

The RedHawks scored for the third straight inning, scoring two runs in the seventh inning and making the score 12-8. Nadeau led off the inning with a double to left-center field and Nurre followed with an infield single to third base, putting runners on first and second base with no outs. Senior Evan Armitage grounded out to the second baseman and after the second baseman erased Nurre on the fielder's choice, his attempt to turn a double play sailed wide, allowing Nadeau to score. Armitage advanced to second base when Mynhier was hit by a pitch, before scoring on a single to right field by Nadeau, cutting the margin to 12-8.

Two home runs in the ninth inning, one solo and one three-run home run, expanded the Zip lead to 16-8 heading into the bottom of the ninth.

The RedHawks were unable to strike in the ninth inning as Akron defeated the RedHawks, 16-8.

Mynhier led the RedHawks at the plate, going a perfect 3-for-3, with two doubles and a single.

The RedHawks and Zips play the second game of their Saturday doubleheader at 6 p.m.
