OXFORD, Ohio - Senior right-hander Shawn Landis (Pleasant Hill, Ohio/Dayton) became the second member of the Miami University (23-20, 10-7 Mid-American) baseball team pitching staff to win his first five decisions by defeating Ohio University (17-22, 5-11 MAC) 8-6 this afternoon at McKie Field at Hayden Park. Landis pitched eight strong innings before being relieved in the ninth to improve his record to a perfect 5-0 on the season.
The RedHawks found themselves on familiar territory in the first inning when they jumped on Ohio starter Marc Cornell for three runs to take an early 3-0 advantage. Junior David Cook (Columbus, Ohio/St. Francis DeSales) led off with a chopper of the plate that landed in between the pitcher, second basemen and shortstop for an infield single. A single through the left side by freshman Sam Sellery (Carmel, Ind./Cathedral) advanced Cook to second, and junior Mike Galloway (St. Thomas, Ontario/Central Michigan) plated Cook with a single to right-center field. Miami's next batter junior Michael Carlin (Pittsburgh, Pa./Mt. Lebanon), last week's MAC East Division Player of the Week, drew a base on balls to load the bases. All three Red and White baserunners advanced one bag, Sellery scoring on the play, when freshman Paul Frietch (Montgomery, Ohio/Moeller) grounded out to the first basemen. Miami topped off its three-run frame with an RBI single from sophomore Ryan Edginton (Chester Springs, Pa./Arizona State).
Landis locked it up on the Bobcats over the next four innings as his RedHawks added two more runs in each of the third and fourth innings. Carlin batted home Galloway in the third stanza, and later scored on a throwing error by Cornell to give the RedHawks a 5-0 lead. Cook, who kept his hitting streak alive at nine games with his hit in the first inning, doubled home junior Zach Schmidt (Cincinnati, Ohio/McNicholas) in the fourth inning. Sellery ran up Miami's lead to 7-0 when he singled up the middle to score Cook.

The Bobcats added another run to their tally in the seventh inning to narrow the gap to 6-2. This run was courtesy of a lead off solo home run by left fielder Brandon Wheeler.
With Landis pitching well in his third start since moving into the starting rotation, Galloway plated Cook in the eighth frame when he reached on a fielder's choice.
Facing a six-run deficit and with three outs remaining in the contest the Bobcats rallied in the ninth inning. Pinch hitter Brian White trotted to first when Landis hit his second batter of the game, and Arbinger followed with a base on balls to put men on first and second. Junior Adam Keel (Fairfield, Ohio/Fairfield) relieved Landis and loaded the bases when hit the first batter he faced. Shrawder registered his second ribbie of the game when he grounded out to third base, cutting the RedHawk lead to 8-3. Scott Brownlee, who entered the game in the eighth frame for an injured Ben Crabtree, belted a three-run blast on a 0-0 count to bring Ohio within two, 8-6. Keel gathered himself and retired the next two Bobcats' batters to give Miami the 8-6 victory.
Sellery went 2-for-4 on the day to keep his hitting streak alive at eight games. Ohio starter Cornell received the loss to fall to 5-4, despite matching Landis with six strike outs each.
The RedHawks and Ohio continue their heated rivalry tomorrow afternoon, May 4, with a doubleheader scheduled to start at 1 p.m.
