Box Score

OXFORD, Ohio - Wright State's Nick Shields blasted a three-run home run in the 11th inning of Tuesday's contest against the Miami University (20-17) baseball team to put his team on top 10-7 for the win. The RedHawks held off Wright State (11-21) scoring opportunities in the ninth and tenth innings before giving up the game-winning home run in the top of the 11th at McKie Field at Hayden Park.

In a back-and-forth game that saw four lead changes the Raiders took the first advantage of the contest with one run in the second frame. Sophomore hurler Chad Reineke (Defiance, Ohio/Ayersville) mowed through the Wright State lineup before allowing a solo shot off the bat of Lance Links.

The RedHawks responded in the bottom half of the frame by scoring two runs of their own to take a 2-1 lead. Swinging a hot bat, 8-for-13 over the weekend against Buffalo, sophomore Ryan Edginton (Chester Springs, Pa./Arizona State) hit a one-out double to get things rolling for the Red and White. Junior Adam Moos (Medina, Ohio/Medina), making his third start of the season, pulled a single through the left side to advance Edginton to third base. After Wright State hurler Aaron Braden struck out the next batter the RedHawks called the double steal, and ran the play to perfection putting Moos on second and Edginton scoring their first run. Freshman Tyler Tabler (Cincinnati, Ohio/Moeller) hit an RBI single, scoring Moos, to give Miami a 2-1 lead.

One inning later in the third stanza Miami increased its advantage to 4-1 with two more runs. The lead was short-lived, however, as the Raiders scored once in the fourth frame and tallied three unearned runs off Reineke in the fifth inning. Wright State scored three runs off three hits and one error in the fifth, and would have scored more if not for a great relay from shortstop junior Andi Scheidt (Cincinnati, Ohio/LaSalle) to freshman catcher Kurt Weigle (West Lafayette, Ind./Benton Central) catching Nick Shields in collision at the plate.

Even with a run in the fifth frame the RedHawks still faced a 7-5 deficit in the seventh inning after Links hit his second solo home run of the game in the sixth inning, and Wright State added one more in the top of the seventh. Miami rallied, however, scoring twice in the frame to knot the game at 7-7. Weigle opened the inning with a lead-off walk, and his pinch runner junior George Stegmiller (Columbus, Ohio/Upper Arlington) scored from first on junior David Cook's (Columbus, Ohio/St. Francis DeSales) double to right-center field. Scheidt's fly out to left field moved Stegmiller to third, and Stegmiller continued his progress to home plate when junior Mike Galloway (St. Thomas, Ontario/Central Michigan) knocked an RBI single through the left side.

With the game tied at 7-7 the two teams battled through the next three innings, each with scoring opportunities, before Shields connected on a 2-2 pitch from junior Adam Keel (Fairfield, Ohio/Fairfield) to put Wright State on top 10-7. Despite a two-out double by Cook, Raiders hurler Brian Stephens held on to the victory to improve to 3-7. Keel falls to 1-4 after giving up the Shields home run, even though all three runs were unearned.

The RedHawks play Cincinnati tomorrow, April 24, at UC's Johnny Bench Field. The game, scheduled for a 6 p.m. start has been moved up to a 3 p.m. first pitch, will have livestats available on UC's webpage. - www.MURedHawks.com -
