Box Score

OXFORD, Ohio - The Miami University (19-16, 6-5 Mid-American) baseball team started two relievers, seniors Shawn Landis (Mt. Pleasant, Ohio/Dayton) and Billy Kieninger (Xenia, Ohio/Xenia), this afternoon at McKie Field at Hayden Park to sweep a doubleheader against the Buffalo (9-16, 2-9 MAC) Bulls 9-3 and 11-3. Landis pitched all seven innings of the first game allowing three runs to improve to 3-0 while Kieninger pitched six solid innings to even his record at 3-3, and was named the Player of the Game for his efforts.

The Red and White didn't hesitate putting runs on the scoreboard in the first game as it chalked four runs in the first frame off Bulls hurler Brendan Dunford. For the second straight game the RedHawks put together a four-run two-out rally to take an early 4-0 lead. The rally was highlighted by a two-run double off the bat of sophomore Ryan Edginton (Chester Springs, Pa./Arizona State), his first of two doubles in the contest. Also knocking in runs were freshman Paul Frietch (Mongomery, Ohio/Moeller) and junior Zach Schmidt (Cincinnati, Ohio/McNicholas).

Dunford kept the RedHawk hitters at bay for the next two innings as his Bulls narrowed the gap to 4-1 with a run in the third frame. A one-out triple by Schmidt in the fourth stanza, however, put a RedHawk in scoring position for the first time since the first inning. Freshman Nolan McCue (Chicago, Ill./De La Salle) laid down a perfect suicide-squeeze bunt to score Schmidt, upping the Miami lead to 5-1.

After Buffalo scored two more runs in the fifth inning to bring the game to a 5-3 count, the RedHawks put together another run in the bottom of the frame. With two outs on the board after two batter the RedHawks, again, knocked around Dunford for three runs. Frietch followed junior Michael Carlin's (Pittsburgh, Pa./Mt. Lebanon) double with a base on balls, and then Edginton walloped his second double of the game to score freshman R.J. Sanfrey (Zionsville, Ind./Homestead), who pinch ran for Carlin. Frietch crossed the plate on a balk by Dunford, and Edginton completed the three-run frame by swiping home plate.

Miami tacked on one more run in the sixth inning to bring the game to its final score of 9-3. Dunford who allowed eight runs, seven of which were earned, was credited with the loss to fall to 3-5. Landis pitched the complete game bettering his record to a perfect 3-0.

The nightcap mirrored the first game as the RedHawks launched the contest with another four-run first inning. After a lead off fly out Buffalo starter John Sullivan walked both freshman Sam Sellery (Carmel, Ind./Cathedral) and junior Mike Galloway (St. Thomas, Ontario/Central Michigan) to put men on first and second. Sullivan struck out the next RedHawk batter but Frietch pulled a single through the right side to score Sellery from second. Frietch moved over to the second bag on a passed ball and Edginton loaded the bases for junior Andi Scheidt (Cincinnati, Ohio/LaSalle) with a base on balls. Scheidt rose to the occasion as he swatted an 0-2 pitch down the left-field line for a base-clearing double.

The RedHawks increased their lead to 6-0 with one run in each the second and third frames before blowing the game wide open in the fourth inning. Galloway led off with a double to right field, and crossed the plate two batters later when Frietch singled home his second RBI of the contest. Edginton followed with his third double of the twinbill to score Frietch. A fly out to right field moved Edginton over to third base, and Schmidt helped Edginton's progress around the bases with an RBI single to right field. McCue, who threw out his ninth basestealer in the first game, moved Schmidt around to third with a double to right-center field. Hitless in his last six at-bats junior David Cook (Columbus, Ohio/St. Francis DeSales) plated both Schmidt and McCue with a single up the middle.

Making his first start of the season Kieninger utilized the 11-0 lead that the RedHawks gave him by working six innings of one-run ball. Kieninger allowed just six Buffalo batters to reach base, and wasn't scarred until his final inning of work when the Bulls tallied one run to cut the deficit to 11-1.

Over the final three innings head coach Tracy Smith used three pitchers, sophomore Chad Reineke (Defiance, Ohio/Ayersville), and freshmen Brad Bachman (Harrison, Ohio/Harrison) and Michael Moljewski (Shelby Twp., Mich./De La Salle Collegiate). Buffalo collected two runs off Bachman in the eighth frame on one hit, one walk and one hit batter, but were stifled in the ninth frame when Moljewski struck out the side. Miami's pitcher of record was Kieninger who improved to 3-3 while Sullivan falls to 2-3 for the Bulls.

Miami and Buffalo wrap up the weekend series tomorrow, Sunday, April 21, at 1 p.m. as the RedHawks attempt to run their streak to eight straight games against the Bulls.
