Box Score

INDIANAPOLIS, Ind. - After taking early 2-1 and 5-4 advantages, respectively, the Miami University (16-16) baseball team allowed the Butler (20-13) Bulldogs to crawl back into the lead and eventually win the contest 7-5 at Bulldog Park. Despite offering up three RedHawk runs, Butler hurler Ryan Chenowith improves to 3-1 by being the pitcher of record when the Bulldogs took the lead for good in the fifth frame.

The Red and White found itself behind 1-0 when Butler plated a single run in the second inning. However, Miami quickly retaliated with two runs of its own in the top half of the third stanza. Freshman Nolan McCue (Chicago, Ill./De La Salle) got the 'Hawks off the ground with a one-out triple, his first career three-bagger. McCue crossed the plate to score Miami's first run of the contest on an RBI single by junior David Cook (Columbus, Ohio/St. Francis DeSales). After freshman Sam Sellery (Carmel, Ind./Cathedral) singled through the right side, junior Mike Galloway (St. Thomas, Ontario/Central Michigan) led Cook to the plate with a line drive up the middle.

Two innings later in the bottom of the fourth, Butler knocked around Miami hurler Chris Leonard (Columbus, Ohio/St. Francis DeSales) for three runs to take a 4-2 lead. After walking the lead-off batter and allowing a single up the middle, Leonard forced the next Butler batter into a ground out, advancing the runners to second and third. Matt Crews plated one runner with a single, and then Dave Mueller followed with a two-run double to right-center field to give the Bulldogs the lead.

For the second time in the contest the RedHawks didn't back down and battled to knock in three runs in the fifth stanza. A lead-off base on balls followed by a strike out brought Cook to the dish who ripped a single into the third basemen's shirt to put runners on first and second. After a Sellery ground out moved the runners to second and third, Galloway poked a two-run single through the left side to even the score at 4-4. With junior Michael Carlin (Pittsburgh, Pa./Mt. Lebanon) at the plate, Galloway stole second and soon thereafter was driven home by Carlin to give the RedHawks a 5-4 lead.

This was the last time that Miami would see the lead as Butler scored three quick runs off junior pitcher Korek Kirkpatrick (Aurora, Ind./South Dearborn) in the bottom half of the frame. Freshman hurler Jim Knytych (LaGrange Park, Ill./Lyons Township) brought his stuff to the hill and put down the Bulldogs without allowing anymore damage. Knytych went on to pitch four innings of scoreless ball, allowing just three Butler batters on base.

Despite Knytych's performance the Red and White was not able to rally back from Butler's 7-5 edge. Kirkpatrick falls to 2-1 on the year after allowing the three fifth-inning runs. Credited with his second save was Bulldog reliever Jon Olson.

Galloway's 3-for-4 performance is his team-leading sixth three-hit contest, and 15th multiple knock game of the season.

Falling to .500 for the first time since opening the 2002 campaign 1-1, the RedHawks host Mid-American Conference foe Buffalo this weekend for a four-game series starting Friday, April 19.
