MOUNT PLEASANT, Mich. - After a one hour and forty-three minute rain delay, Miami University's baseball team used a stellar pitching efforts from senior Matt Erwood and freshman Samuel Dawes to earn a 3-2 win over Central Michigan in Mid-American Conference action Friday afternoon. Miami improved to 9-21 overall and 3-7 in MAC play, while Central Michigan fell to 13-17 overall and 3-6 in MAC action.

Junior Eric Darlage led off the second inning by coming back from a zero balls, two strikes count to earn a walk. Darlage moved to second on a wild pitch, before moving to third base on a passed ball. During Miami's next at-bat, junior J.D. Mynhier grounded out to the shortstop, plating Darlage and giving the RedHawks a 1-0.

Miami tacked on two more runs in the fourth inning to expand its lead to 3-0. Junior Chris Nadeau led off the inning with a single and then moved to second base as junior Tommy Nurre drew a walk. Miami's next batter, freshman John Hornke, hit a grounder under the second baseman's glove, which plated Nadeau and kept runners on first and second base. Nurre and Hornke moved up a base on a sacrifice bunt, before Mynhier drove in his second run of the game with a ground out, increasing Miami's margin to 3-0.

Central Michigan scored two runs in the fifth inning courtesy of a two-run home run by Jeff Nowaczyk to close within 3-2. The Chippewas threatened again in the seventh inning as the lead-off batter singled and advanced to second base on a sacrifice bunt. Dawes came into the game in relief and recorded a ground out and a strike out, stranding the tying run on third base to end the Chippewa scoring threat.

 

 

Dawes retired all eight batters he faced, including striking out two batters in the ninth inning, to earn his first save of the season as the RedHawks defeated the Chippewas, 3-2.

Senior Matt Erwood earned his third win of the season after going 6 1/3 innings and striking out five Chippewa batters. Mynhier led the RedHawks with two RBIs.

Miami plays game two of its three-game series with Central Michigan tomorrow at 1 p.m.
