OXFORD, Ohio - The Miami University (13-14-1) baseball team is only one win away from .500 after a 2-1 victory over Dayton (8-21) at McKie Field at Hayden Park on a very cold and windy day afternoon. For the fourth consecutive game the RedHawks left 10-plus runners left on base, but freshman righthander Jason Friedman (Chicago, Ill./Whitney Young) tossed seven brilliant innings of four-hit ball for his first career win.
In their lowest-scoring affair of the 2003 season, the RedHawks took a 1-0 lead in the second inning on a botched double play by Dayton. Sophomore Tyler Tabler (Cincinnati, Ohio/Moeller) singled with one out to put men on first and second, and then sophomore Brian Canada (Fishers, Ind./Hamilton Southeastern) loaded the bases when he was hit by a pitch. The Red and White scored its first run unconventionally on the next at-bat when Dayton forced the lead runner out at home, but when it attempted to turn the double play at first the catcher overthrew first base and the ball rolled into right field. Tabler took advantage of the throwing error and scored from second base to give Miami the 1-0 lead.
The lead remained at 1-0 through the next five innings as Friedman struck out three batters and allowed only four hits. Twice during this span Friedman sent the Flyers down in order to keep the lead. The first-year hurler finished the contest with a line of 7.0 innings pitched, one earned run, four walk and three strikeouts.
Miami tacked on another run in the seventh inning to take a 2-0 advantage into the final two frames. With two outs senior Michael Carlin (Pittsburgh, Pa./Mt. Lebanon) came to the plate and bashed his first triple of the season to deep right-center field. The Red and White then played the percentages by pinch-hitting against the Dayton lefthander, Adam Revelette, and brought a righthanded batter to the dish in senior Andi Scheidt (Cincinnati, Ohio/LaSalle). Scheidt delivered with an RBI double down the left-field line to score Carlin and give the RedHawks a 2-0 lead.
