OXFORD, Ohio - Sophomore lefthander Keith Weiser (Hamilton, Ohio) struck out a career-high 10 batters on Friday afternoon as the Miami University RedHawks (18-11) downed the Panthers of Birmingham-Southern College (20-10) by a score of 4-1. Weiser limited the Panthers to just five hits and improved his record to 4-0 on the year.
Miami broke a scoreless deadlock in the bottom half of the sixth inning with three runs off of Birmingham-Southern's Brandon Hynick. Senior John Slone (Cincinnati, Ohio) plated Miami's first run with a squeeze bunt that scored sophomore Ryne Robinson (Toledo, Ohio) from third. Senior Brian Canada's (Fishers, Ind.) infield single plated sophomore Brandon Hillier (Hinsdale, Ill.) from second to give the RedHawks a 2-0 lead before Canada himself scored Miami's third run on senior Paul Frietch's (Cincinnati, Ohio) single to right.
Junior shortstop Eric Radley (Hermitage, Tenn.) made it 4-0 for Miami with an RBI single in the bottom of the seventh. Senior Tyler Tabler (Cincinnati, Ohio) led off the inning with a single and was bunted to second by senior Michael Moljewski (Shelby Twp., Mich.) before scoring on Radley's single up the middle.
A pair of Miami errors in the top of the ninth inning led to an unearned run and spoiled Weiser's bid for his first shutout of the season.
The RedHawks banged out 11 hits and scored all four runs off of Hynick, whose record dropped to 5-2 on the season. Paul Jones relieved Hynick in the eighth inning and allowed one hit.
