KALAMAZOO, Mich. - Chad Tarpley's line-drive single to centerfield drove in Sam Flamont with the winning run in the bottom of the ninth inning as Western Michigan beat Miami, 6-5, Friday afternoon at Haymes Field in the Mid-American Conference opener for both teams. The RedHawks have lost four straight to the Broncos.
Flamont reached base on a walk, took second on a fielder's choice and stole third prior to Tarpley's game winner off of senior reliever Billy Kieninger (Xenia, Ohio/Xenia), whose record falls to 2-2.
Miami (13-9, 0-1) had tied the game at 5-5 in the top of the inning when, with two outs, sophomore Ryan Edginton (Chester Springs, Pa./Malvern Prep) crossed the plate on a bouncer up the middle by freshman John Slone (Cincinnati, Ohio/St. Xavier). Edginton singled off of closer Tyler Grinnell and was sacrificed to second by freshman pinch hitter Nolan McCue (Chicago, Ill./De La Salle).
The RedHawks held a comfortable 4-1 lead until the fifth, when the Broncos (8-8, 1-0) touched junior starting pitcher Chris Leonard (Columbus, Ohio/St. Francis De Sales) for four runs to go up 5-4. They scored on an error, a balk and back-to-back RBI doubles by Greg Graham and Chad Tarpley.
Miami jumped out to a 4-0 advantage after five men had stepped to the plate in the top of the first. Slone started things with a double, junior George Stegmiller (Columbus, Ohio/Upper Arlington) walked and junior Mike Galloway (St. Thomas, Ontario/Central Elgin/Central Michigan) drove both of them in with a double to left-center for his team-leading 29th and 30th RBIs.

Western Michigan starter Pat Misch settled down after that, no-hitting the RedHawks over his final 6.2 innings of work, before giving way to Grinnell in the eighth. Misch struck out nine and walked six.
Leonard held the Broncos in check until the third, when Adam Rosales took him deep to straight-away center.
Making his fifth start of the year, Leonard went eight innings, giving up 10 hits and five runs (two earned), while striking out five and walking three.
The two teams are back at it Saturday, April 6 for a doubleheader starting at noon.
