OXFORD, Ohio - Three home runs and 10 runs in the fourth inning spelled disaster for the visiting Bearcats as the Miami University (13-8) baseball team went on to defeat Cincinnati (11-16-1) for the second time this season 15-10 at McKie Field at Hayden Park. The rivals combined for 34 hits and eight home runs as the RedHawks extend their winning streak over UC to three games.
After getting tagged for five runs in the first inning and one in the second, Miami faced a 6-3 deficit entering the bottom of the fourth. With the wind swirling and blowing out to left field, the RedHawks rallied to score 10 runs in the frame, marking the second time this season that they have recorded at least 10 runs in a single inning. Sophomore Ryan Edginton (Chester Springs, Pa./Arizona State) led off the frame with a solo shot to right field, which was promptly followed by a double off the bat of freshman Brian Canada (Fishers, Ind./Hamilton Southeastern). Two batters later Canada crossed the plate when freshman John Slone (Cincinnati, Ohio/St. Xavier) hit an RBI single to left field. Both Slone and junior Zach Schmidt (Cincinnati, Ohio/McNicholas), who reached on a fielder's choice, advanced to second and third base, respectively, when UC's left fielder misplayed the ball. Two consecutive RBI single's from freshman Sam Sellery (Carmel, Ind./Cathedral) and junior Mike Galloway (St. Thomas, Ontario/Central Michigan) scored Schmidt and Slone to give Miami its first lead of the contest. The RedHawks put up six more runs in the stanza to take a formidable 13-6 lead into the fifth inning.
Cincinnati managed to score four more runs to Miami's two in the final five innings, but was unable to cut the deficit to any less than the final score of 15-10. Three Bearcats left the park, including a first-inning grand slam off the bat of Aaron Moll, while Miami recorded five round-trippers in the contest. Junior David Cook (Columbus, Ohio/St. Francis DeSales) was named Miami's player of the game after going 3-for-5 with a game- and career-high four RBI.
Freshman
Jim Knytych (LaGrange Park, Ill./Lyons Township) pitched 5.2 solid innings of relief for the RedHawks to record his first career victory. Knytych struck out a career-high seven Bearcats after entering the game in the first inning. Suffering the loss for Cincinnati was Tony Maynard.
Also collecting home runs for the RedHawks were Slone, junior Andi Scheidt (Cincinnati, Ohio/LaSalle) and Canada. Canada's dinger was his first career home run with the Red and White.
