Box Score
OXFORD, Ohio - Juniors Mike Galloway (St. Thomas, Ontario/Central Michigan) and David Cook (Columbus, Ohio/St. Francis DeSales) both left the yard as the Miami University (9-7) baseball ended its four-game skid with a 7-3 victory over the visiting Mastadons of IUPU-Fort Wayne (8-14). Galloway's solo shot to right-center field in the first inning was the first home run in the new ballpark, while Cook knocked in the game-winning run with his third dinger of the season in the third frame.
After Galloway's solo home run in the first inning, Miami put together a small rally in the third inning after freshman catcher John Slone (Cincinnati, Ohio/Moeller) led off the stanza with a double to left field. Galloway, who went 4-for-5 on the afternoon and was named the Player of the Game, followed with a single to left field to advance Slone to third base. Slone moved homeward bound when junior Michael Carlin (Pittsburgh, Pa./Mt. Lebanon) hit into a fielder's choice, recording his 17th ribbie of the season. Carlin moved into scoring position when IPFW's David Zachary missed his target with a wild pitch, and then crossed the plate after Cook ripped a line drive over the left field fence.
The Mastadons provided Miami with a bit of a scare in the fifth inning with a rally of their own. After two singles to lead off the inning, Miami starter Korey Kirkpatrick (Aurora, Ind./South Dearborn) looked to have things in control when he got a comebacker up the middle, but he failed to turn the double play when he tossed the ball wide of third base. IPFW took advantage of the throwing error by scoring on the play, and later with two more runs to bring the game to a 4-3 tally after five innings.
Miami added one run in the sixth inning when junior
Zach Schmidt (Cincinnati, Ohio/McNicholas) tripled to right-center field, scoring freshman
Sam Sellery (Carmel, Ind./Cathedral) all the way from first base. Two more RedHawk insurance runs were posted on the scoreboard in the seventh frame when sophomore
Ryan Edginton (Chester Springs, Pa./Arizona State) singled through the left side with the bases juiced and two out.
After Kirkpatrick pitched 7.1 solid innings to record his second win of the season, senior Shawn Landis (Pleasant Hill, Ohio/Dayton) came into the game in the eighth inning with runners on first and second. Landis promptly recorded the final five outs of the contest for his first save of the season. Collecting the loss on the hill for IPFW was David Zachary who drops to 1-6 on the season, despite his 2-for-3 showing at the plate as a pitcher/designated hitter.
The RedHawks continue their homestand tomorrow afternoon, March 28, at 3:30 p.m. against Youngstown State, and this weekend against Georgia State.
