WEST LAFAYETTE, Ind. - The Miami University (8-6) baseball team dropped its third straight contest this afternoon at Lambert Field to Purdue University (5-12), 12-2. The Boilermakers ace, right-hander Chadd Blasko, struck out 15 RedHawks en route to his second victory of the season. It is the fifth straight game that Miami has struck out more than 10 times.
After a scoreless first inning for both squads, Purdue got two tallies in the second inning, and one in each of the third, fourth, and fifth frames to take a 5-0 lead. The Boilermakers did most of their damage in the fifth stanza when Miami used three pitchers who allowed five runs on six hits, including a three-run blast off the aluminum of Nick McIntyre. McIntyre finished the contest with three hits and a team-best six RBI.
Facing a 10-0 deficit, freshman catcher Kurt Weigle (West Lafayette, Ind./Benton Central) led off the eighth frame with a pinch-hit single to right-center field. After dealing his career-high 15th K of the contest, Blasko proceeded to hit junior Andi Scheidt (Cincinnati, Ohio/LaSalle) to put men on first and second base. Freshman David Franco (Powell, Ohio/Olentangy) followed with a ball that couldn't be handled by Purdue's shortstop, allowing Weigle to cross the dish and Scheidt to advance to third. A slap single to right field by sophomore Josh Widlansky (Coral Springs, Fla./Travella) drove in Scheidt to round out Miami's scoring for the contest.
Sophomore righty Aaron Johnson (Ortonville, Mich./Ortonville Brandon) wrapped up the final two innings for the RedHawks, allowing four hits and two unearned runs in his first appearance of the season. Credited with his second loss of the season was sophomore Justin Farina (Sarina, Ontario/St. Christopher's), while Blasko sat down 15 batters, a season-worst for the Red and White.
Miami and Purdue play again tomorrow, Sunday, March 24, at 1 p.m. The game is being played in the RedHawks new complex, McKie Field at Hayden Park and is being broadcast on WMUB, WMSR and the world wide web via www.MURedHawks.com.
