Bradenton, Fla. - The Miami baseball team dropped its sixth straight decision Wednesday, losing a four-run lead as Rhode Island came-from-behind for a 5-4 win at the IMG Academy in Bradenton.
The RedHawks blasted out of the blocks early, posting themselves to a 4-0 lead in the second stanza. The lead was thanks to the hitting heroics of Mike Ferris, John Slone and Ryan Edginton, who put together three straight hits to start the inning and drive in the first two runs. After an error and a walk that loaded the bases, David Cook drove in Miami's third run of the inning on Rhode Island's second error of the inning. Andi Scheidt drove in the fourth run with a sacrifice fly.
Ram pitching took over from there and allowed Rhode Island a chance to get back into the game. After Miami's four runs in the second, Ram pitchers set down 17 straight hitters while their offense started chipping away at the Miami lead with three in the sixth.
In the top of the ninth with two outs, Rhode Island completed its comeback tying the game after freshman pitcher Matt Long hit a batter and he stole second. Ram leadoff hitter Wayne Russo then tied the game with an RBI single. Then Rhode Island got a break to take the lead as Miami made an error that allowed the go-ahead run to score.
Long took the loss, dropping his record to 0-2 on the season. Starter Chad Reineke gave up three runs in 5.1 innings, only one of which was earned. Long closed out the game giving up two runs, one earned.
Miami (3-7) takes on St. Francis (N.Y.) tomorrow at the IMG Academy at 2:30 p.m.
