HOMESTEAD, Fla. - Two four-hit performances from David Cook and Mike Galloway helped the Miami University (7-1) baseball team overcome a tough Radford squad, 12-7, at Kings Field. Josh Widlansky knocked in the game-winning run in the fifth frame, while leading the RedHawks to their sixth straight victory with three RBI.
Miami jumped out on top early with a two-run first inning. Starting the rally for the RedHawks was Cook who ripped a single past Radford's third basemen. Widlansky followed by drawing a base on balls, and after a pop out to the second basemen, Michael Carlin hit home Cook for the game's first tally. After Ryan Edginton singled to load the bases, Ty Tabler hit the ball deep enough to center field recording the sacrifice fly, scoring Widlansky to give Miami a 2-0 lead.
In the bottom half of the second inning Radford touched up Miami starter Korey Kirkpatrick for six runs on five hits. The six-run inning was highlighted by a two-run triple from Radford's left fielder Kellen Wohlford. Wohlford finished the contest going three-for-five with two RBI and two runs scored. Registering the only dinger of the contest, and finishing Radford's second inining rally, was center fielder Jerry Fulton with a two-run dinger.
A five-run third inning for the RedHawks wiped out Radord's lead for good, knotting the game at seven apiece. Galloway reached base twice in the third stanza,leading off with a single and later walking, as Miami batted through the order en route to scoring five runs and four hits. Galloway finished the contest four-for-five at the plate with a double and a triple. With a crucial two-out two-run single, Widlansky helped the Red and White regain the lead 7-6.
Radford made one last attempt at a comeback in the fourth inning when after two quick outs Wohlford doubled to right field and advanced to third on a Kirkpatrick wild pitch. Fulton batted home is teammate with a hard-hit single to right field.
With the game tied 7-7 entering the fifth frame, Miami gave itself the lead permanently with one run in the fifth, and two runs in each of the seventh and eighth innings. Cook, who finished the game four-for-four at the plate, registered his second hit of the game with a single down the left-field line. He quickly made his way around the bases to third after Radford's pitcher threw the ball away on an attempted pick-off maneuver. Cook scored the game-winning run after Widlansky grounded out to third base for the second out of the inning.
The RedHawks tacked on four more runs in the final innings as the bullpen finished off the Radford lineup. Shawn Landis struck out two in the eighth inning allowing one hit, while Billy Kieninger closed the game with a perfect ninth-inning, striking out two batters. Kirkpatrick collected his first win of the season pitching seven strong innings for the RedHawks, checking out five Radford hitters while letting seven to cross the plate.
The RedHawks improve to 7-1 overall and a perfect 4-0 on their spring break trip with this afternoon's victory. Miami plays again tomorrow in Miami, Fla. against Florida International at 7 p.m.
