A 1992 graduate of Ohio Wesleyan, Googins starts his fourth season with the RedHawks after an eight-year stint as an assistant coach at Indiana University, working primarily with the outfielders. Googins also is in charge of academics, travel and field maintenance. Last year, the team recorded an overall 2.88 grade-point average, the highest among Miami's men's teams. The naming of Michael Carlin as an all-American in 2002 was a direct result of Googins' work with the Miami outfielders.
Googins work with the outfielders hit its peak last season when he saw both Carlin and David Cook leave Miami for the professional ranks. Cook was drafted by the Chicago White Sox and Carlin signed a free agent contract with the Pittsburgh Pirates.
While serving as one Miami's assistant coaches, Googins also is pursuing his Master's Degree in Sport Organization at Miami. In addition to his class work and coaching duties, he also teaches classes in the PHS department.
Two summers ago he served as head coach of the Southern Ohio Copperheads in their inaugural season. The Copperheads located in Athens, Ohio, are part of the Great Lakes Summer Collegiate League. Googins also helped coach the GLC all-star team, which played against Team USA.
Googins has served as a baseball camp instructor at Miami, Indiana, Emory and Southern Maryland. Furthermore, Googins gained experience working with the Columbus Clippers during the summer of 1992, assisting with ticket requests, gameday preparations and public relations.
Googins, a native of Granville, Ohio, was a three-year letterwinner at Ohio Wesleyan in Delaware, Ohio. Googins and his wife, Jody, reside in Oxford with their five-month old daughter, Ellie.
