OXFORD, Ohio - After putting on a strong showing prior to the holiday break, senior guard Maggie Boyer and senior forward Julian Mavunga were rewarded with the gift of being named Miami Female and Male Athlete of the Week, respectively, Tuesday for the week of Dec. 19-25.
Boyer (Lebanon, Ind.) became the 20th player in program history to reach 1,000 career points as a free throw with 5:25 left in Miami’s 75-55 win over Northeastern last Monday put her over the distinguished mark. She finished the game with 12 points while she entered the game needing 11 points to reach 1,000. She also pulled down three rebounds, dished out a trio of assists and had a steal. Boyer made both her free throws and knocked down a pair of three-pointers while helping the RedHawks to the win.
Mavunga (Indianapolis, Ind.) recorded double-doubles in both of his games last week, giving him seven on the year and 21 for his career. He averaged 19.0 points per game and 11.0 rebounds per game last week, keeping pace with his season average of 20.3 ppg and 10.8 rpg that he entered the week with – one of just three players nationally averaging 20 points and 10 boards. Mavunga shot 12-for-23 (52.2 percent) for the week, including 8-for-14 from the floor at No. 2 Ohio State Thursday, when he scored a game-high 20 points and had 10 rebounds. He also had three blocks against OSU in a full 40 minutes of action. He played all 40 minutes against Evansville on Tuesday as well, scoring 18 points and pulling down a game-high 12 rebounds. He also handed out a Miami season-best five assists, had a steal and swatted two more shots, giving him five blocks on the week. He was 9-for-9 from the free throw line against the Purple Aces and was 13-for-14 for the week from the charity stripe.
The honor is the first for Boyer this year and the third for Mavunga, who also claimed Male Athlete of the Week last week.
Both players return to the court this week as women’s basketball hosts Chicago State Wednesday at 7 p.m. while the men host William & Mary Thursday at 7 p.m. with both games at Millett Hall.
