OXFORD, Ohio - Leading each of their teams to a win last week, junior forward Kirsten Olowinski and junior defenseman Steven Spinell have been named Miami’s Female and Male Athletes of the Week, respectively, for the week of Dec. 5-Dec. 11. It is the first such honor for each student-athlete.

Kirsten Olowinski

Olowinski (Erie, Pa.) was the jack-of-all-trades last week, providing both offense and defense for the women’s basketball team. She recorded a double-double in both contests, and now has double-doubles in four straight games. She had 18 points and 11 rebounds as the RedHawks nearly upset Duquesne on Tuesday. She then followed that up with 12 points and 12 rebounds in a win over Eastern Kentucky on Saturday. In that contest she also helped set up her teammates, recording a career-high five assists. Olowinski didn’t miss much during the week, shooting 13-for-18 in the two games combined. She was also a force defensively, recording six total blocks, three in each game. For the week, she averaged 15.0 points per game and 11.5 rebounds per game.

Steven Spinell

Spinell (Vernon Hills, Ill.) anchored the hockey team's defense in a weekend split with No. 4 Ohio State. He led Miami's penalty kill as the 'Hawks went 10-of-11 on the penalty kill for the weekend, including a 5-on-3 kill on Friday while going 5-for-5 Saturday. He was also on the ice for Miami's short-handed goal on Friday at OSU. Spinell blocked five shots in the two games with three Friday and two Saturday. He was a career-best +4 in Friday's win over No. 4 OSU as he was on the ice for four of Miami's five goals while not allowing one while he was on the ice. In that game, he also assisted on Miami's game-winning goal. Spinell finished with a +3 rating on the weekend and an assist while earning CCHA Defenseman of the Week for the first time in his career.

Olowinski and the rest of the RedHawks return to the court tonight (Tuesday) when they host Wright State at 7 p.m. before welcoming Cincinnati to Millett Hall Saturday at 2 p.m. in the first half of a basketball doubleheader. Spinell and the rest of the hockey team are off for the holidays and return to the ice Jan. 6-7 at No. 14/15 Michigan State.
