OXFORD, Ohio - After dominating performances throughout the week, senior forward Julian Mavunga and junior swimmer Bekka Westrick are Miami’s Male and Female Athletes of the Week, respectively, for the week of Nov. 28-Dec. 4.
Mavunga (Indianapolis, Ind.) averaged 25 points per game and 10 rebounds per game in a pair of contests last week while shooting 63 percent from the floor, including 66.7 percent from behind the arc. He accounted for nearly 47 percent of Miami’s points on the week, pouring in a game-high 26 points and 12 boards Nov. 29 at Cincinnati, giving him his 17th career double-double. He also topped 1,000 points for his career in the game. On Dec. 3 at Troy, Mavunga totaled a game-high 24 points in his 100th career game, while reaching at least 20 points for the third straight time and 11th time in his career. He also dished out three assists against the Trojans and was 11-for-12 from the free throw line, shooting 70 percent from the charity stripe for the week. He currently ranks 10th in the country in scoring on the year and is 28th in rebounding.
Westrick (Fairfield, Ohio) won every individual event she entered and helped three relay teams to first-place finishes at the Miami Invitational last weekend, leading the RedHawks to victory over the seven visiting teams. She touched first in the 100-yard butterfly as well as the 50-, 100- and 200-yard freestyles. She sprinted to NCAA Championship “B” time standards with times of 22.77 in the 50 free, 49.97 in the 100 free and 53.53 in the 100 fly. Her time in the 100 fly broke the Miami record in the event and her 50 and 100 free swims were the second-fastest in Miami history. She also added a first-place time of 1:48.93 in the 200 free. All four times are the fastest in the MAC this season. Westrick also earned wins as a member of the 200- and 400-yard medley and 800-yard freestyle relay teams, earning NCAA “B” cuts in the 200 medley and 800 freestyle relays.
The honor is the second for Westrick, who also won Miami Female Athlete of the Week for the week of Oct. 24-30, while it is Mavunga’s first award of the year.
Mavunga and the RedHawks return to the court Saturday when they host Wright State at Millett Hall at 3:30 p.m. Westrick and the rest of Miami’s women’s swimming team are off until a dual meet with Cincinnati on Jan. 13 in Oxford at the Nixon Aquatic Center.
