OXFORD, Ohio - Both Miami’s men’s and women’s basketball teams had strong weeks last week as the squads produced Miami’s Athletes of the Week with sophomore forward Bill Edwards winning Male Athlete of the Week and junior guard Courtney Osborn claiming Female Athlete of the Week for the week of Nov. 14-20. This is the first Miami Athlete of the Week award for both student-athletes.
Edwards (Middletown, Ohio), a transfer from Penn State, was impressive in his first two outings as a RedHawk, averaging 17.0 ppg, 9.0 rpg and 3.0 apg while leading Miami to a 1-1 record to open the season against tough, local rivals. He recorded a double-double in his first game donning the red and white, tallying 14 points and 10 rebounds to go along with three assists and two blocked shots in 42 minutes of action in the RedHawks’ 72-67 overtime win over Dayton Tuesday. On Friday at No. 13/14 Xavier, Edwards made his first start and led all players with 21 points and eight rebounds. He put on a 3-point clinic early, going 4-for-4 from long range in the first half and accounted for half the RedHawks’ 3-ponters for the game, shooting 66.7 percent from long range and 46.2 percent from the floor while going a perfect 5-for-5 from the free throw line. He also had three assists, two blocked shots and two steals and was the only player to play a full 40 minutes against the Musketeers, keeping Miami in the game until the very end before the ‘Hawks fell, 66-60.
Osborn (Fishers, Ind.) had great all-around games in leading Miami to two wins last week. She was the leading scorer in both games, recording 17 points in a 56-49 win at Marshall on Wednesday and 25 points in an 81-56 victory over UMass on Saturday. In addition to her 21.0 ppg average, the junior point guard helped set up her teammates as well, recording 10 assists in those two games, with a game-high five in each. She shot .500 (13-for-26) for the week and hit six total three-pointers, including five against UMass. In addition, she pulled down five boards against Marshall and had a game-high four steals while adding three more thefts in the win over UMass. Osborn was also named Mid-American Conference East Division Player of the Week for her efforts on Monday.
Edwards and the men’s basketball team already recorded a 71-61 win over Saginaw Valley Monday and return to the court Saturday at Southeast Missouri. Osborn and the women’s basketball team host Indiana tonight (Tuesday) before traveling to Florida to face Stetson on Friday.
