Captains’ Corner is a weekly update from a captain or leader of one of the RedHawks’ 19 teams that will run every other Thursday throughout the academic year. Today’s update is from volleyball’s Amy Raseman and Lisa Treadway. Amy is a senior from Barrington, Illinois, who prepped at Barrington High School. She is an accountancy major with a minor in family relationships. Lisa is a junior from Dayton, Ohio, who prepped at Chaminade-Julienne. She majors in exercise science. Check back on Oct. 20 for the next edition of Captains’ Corner

We’ve hit the halfway mark on our 2011 season and wanted to give you an update right from the heart of the team. So far we have won two pre-conference tournaments, held our own with the four-time defending national champion Penn State, and are undefeated at home (5-0). After our second week of conference play, we are 3-1 in the MAC.

We believe our success this season is due in part to how high we set the bar during summer workouts, in the weight room, the classroom and during preseason. Collectively, we have improved our team chemistry and are dedicated to playing for each other.

We could not describe our efforts this season without giving credit to our coaching staff. We are proud to be a part of Coach Carolyn Condit’s winning program as she approaches her 600th career win. Anna Nies, in her fifth year with the program, is a solid contributor to our game strategy against every opponent. Chuck Crawford is in his first year at Miami and has made an immediate impact on the team. Chuck has brought us the fire of an aggressive hitting mentality to strengthen our offense.

Throughout the year, we have been planning our upcoming trip to Europe. In May, Miami Volleyball will be taking off to Italy, Austria, and Slovenia and we couldn’t be more excited! We have been fundraising and putting our efforts together in order to make this trip an experience we will never forget. We will also be privileged to play against European opponents in order to improve our game. Traveling around the three countries will be a great experience to share with each other and you!

We wanted to say a special thanks to the women’s soccer team. After their win at Kent State in the afternoon on Friday, Sept. 23, they came to cheer us on to a three-set win at Kent State later that evening. It was great to have that support on the road!

Thank you for your continued support, and we will see you at our upcoming home matches on Oct. 14 at 7 p.m. vs. Eastern Michigan and Oct. 15 at 5 p.m. vs. Central Michigan.

Love and Honor,
Amy Raseman and Lisa Treadway
