OXFORD, Ohio - After leading Miami Volleyball to a 4-0 start last weekend, sophomore defensive specialist/outside hitter Madison Hardy has been named Miami’s Female Athlete of the Week for the week of Aug. 22-28. For the second straight week, no men’s sports competed, so there will not be a Male Athlete of the Week this week.
Hardy (Louisville, Ky.) was named Tournament MVP of the Quality Inn/ASICS Invitational as she guided the RedHawks to the tournament title. Miami opened the 2011 season with victories over Coppin State (3-0) and Eastern Illinois (3-1) last Friday, before downing host Indiana State (3-2) and Chicago State (3-0) on Saturday to wrap up the tournament.
Hardy was Miami’s defensive leader at the tournament, serving as Miami’s libero in all but one set over the weekend. She recorded 68 digs, an average of 4.86 digs per set. Hardy had double-digit digs in three games over the weekend, including 26 against Eastern Illinois, only three off her career high. She also recorded 15 digs in a comeback win over Indiana State and finished the weekend with 19 digs against Chicago State. Hardy helped the RedHawk defense hold opponents to a .148 hitting percentage at the tournament.
Miami Volleyball looks to continue its strong start this weekend when it travels to Pittsburgh, Pa. for the University of Pittsburgh Invitational Tournament. The RedHawks have a tall task to open the tournament, facing four-time defending national champion and second-ranked Penn State Sep. 2 before playing New Hampshire later in the day. Miami then closes the tournament Sep. 3 against the host Panthers.
