OXFORD, Ohio - After dominating its competition last week, senior decathlete Jordan Goffena and senior pitcher Jessica Simpson have been named Miami's Male and Female Athletes of the Week, respectively, for the week of April 16-22.
Goffena (Sidney, Ohio) captured the decathlon Friday and Saturday at the All-Ohio Championships, hosted by Miami, as he totaled a personal-best 7,314 points, which is the top decathlon score in the MAC this year and ranks 23rd nationally. He beat out the runner-up, Akron's Bryan Jones, by 253 points, while competing against a field of 13. His score was over 300 points better than his previous best total while he now ranks third in Miami history in the decathlon. Of the 10 events, Goffena posted personal bests in five of them and finished first in all four races on the track. He won the 100m dash in a personal-best 11.03 and the 400m dash in a personal-best 49.34 while also crossing first in the 1500m run (4:40.45) and the 110m hurdles (14.49). He took second in the discus with a personal-best throw of 38.68m/126-11, while taking fourth in both the shot put (12.26m/40-2.75) and javelin (49.98m/164-0), both of which are also PRs. By winning the decathlon, Goffena picked up 10 points to help Miami take third overall at the meet.
The honor is Goffena's first Miami Male Athlete of the Week this year.
Simpson (North Canton, Ohio) was nearly perfect the entire week, allowing only two unearned runs in a, 2-1, 10-inning loss to Eastern Kentucky on Tuesday. She pitched 30.2 innings in five games, allowing only 18 hits the entire week, while striking out an incredible 43 batters. She earned three complete game shutout wins in MAC play over the weekend. After allowing only five hits in 10 innings pitched in the game against EKU on Tuesday, she allowed only three hits, while striking out 12 in a 4-0 shutout win over Central Michigan on Friday. She came back in during the second game of the doubleheader and did not allow a hit over the final 2.2 innings. On Saturday and Sunday, Simpson did not allow Eastern Michigan to get a single runner past second base in two games over the weekend, as she threw another two shutouts. Teams only hit .162 against Simpson the entire week.
Simpson has now earned Miami Female Athlete of the Week three times this year (all within the last six weeks) and also garnered MAC East Division Pitcher of the Week for her efforts as well, her fifth such honor this year.
Goffena is back on the track this Saturday as Miami remains at home, hosting the RedHawk Invitational, while Simpson returns to the field Friday for a doubleheader at Buffalo.
