OXFORD, Ohio - A pair of underclassmen each helped their teams to success last weekend as freshman outfielder Matt Honchel and sophomore tennis player Christiana Raymond are Miami’s Male and Female Athletes of the Week, respectively, for the week of March 26 to April 1. It is the first such honor for each athlete this year.
Honchel (Harrodsburg, Ky.) batted an amazing .786 from his No. 2 spot in the lineup in Miami’s series win over Toledo. He recorded 11 hits in 14 at-bats, including a double in all three contests. He registered a career-high four hits in Saturday’s regularly-scheduled game, a 5-3 Miami win, and equaled that mark in Sunday’s 11-3 victory over the Rockets. Honchel had three hits in the series opener (suspended Friday, finished Saturday). He now leads the RedHawks with 14 multiple-hit games in 27 outings this year. On the weekend he drove in four runs (two each on Saturday and Sunday), while scoring six times. Honchel also went 1-for-2 on stolen base attempts. The leftfielder leads the team in hitting with a .436 average and is batting .708 in six league games.
Honchel was also named Mid-American Conference East Division Player of the Week for his efforts, his first such award.
Raymond (Westerville, Ohio) went 4-0 in two matches over the weekend while leading Miami to a pair of wins. On Friday, her and Nimisha Mohan won third doubles, 8-6, to help secure the doubles point before gutting out a three-set win at third singles to give Miami a 5-2 win over Toledo. The next day at Eastern Michigan, Raymond again won third doubles, 8-5, with Mohan to clinch the doubles point and won her match at third singles, 6-4, 6-3, over EMU’s Ankita Bhatia as Miami rolled the Eagles, 6-1, to clinch its 29th straight regular-season MAC win.
Honchel and the RedHawks return to the diamond this week, hosting Ohio State Wednesday at 6:30 p.m. at McKie Field at Hayden Park. Raymond and the rest of the tennis team are back on the court this weekend, hosting Bowling Green Friday and Western Michigan Saturday in Miami’s first home matches in over a month.
