OXFORD, Ohio - Miami University women's basketball coach Maria Fantanarosa announced the signing of two players to National Letters of Intent on Thursday. Nicole Anderson (Terre Haute, Ind./Terre Haute North) and Jillian Spurlock (Hamilton, Ohio/Hamilton) will begin play for the RedHawks during the 2013-14 season.

"Both of these players bring a champion's mentality to our program," said Fantanarosa. "They find a way to win with their hard work and versatility. Both will have the opportunity to contribute as freshmen, which is important because we will be graduating a strong senior class this year."

Anderson is a 6-1 forward beginning her fourth season as a varsity starter for Terre Haute North High School. In the Terre Haute Savings Bank Tournament last weekend, she was named the MVP. As a junior last season she averaged 15 points and nine rebounds a game while earning honorable mention all-state. Anderson was also named to the Indiana Junior Stars team that received the opportunity to scrimmage against the Indiana All-Star team (which was made up of the state's best players from the class of 2012, current RedHawk Jessica Rupright was a part of it).

"Nicole is a great sign," said Fantanarosa. "She is a strong player who knows how to score. She is a competitor who will make a difference quickly."

Spurlock is a 5-8 guard in her fourth year on varsity for Hamilton High School this winter. As a junior, she averaged 17.0 points, 6.5 rebounds, 4.6 steals and 3.6 assists per game for the Big Blue. Last season she was named First-Team All-GMC, Second-Team Ohio Southwest District, the Journal News Area Player of the Year and All-Ohio honorable mention. Spurlock also was part of the Ohio Top 100 Showcase.

"Jillian is a solid athlete who has great potential," said Fantanarosa. "She will outwork everyone at both ends of the court. Her energy and competitiveness stand out and will allow her to take on many roles."

While these two players will not be joining the 'Hawks until next season, the 2012-13 edition of the team returns to action later Thursday when it hosts Robert Morris at 7 p.m.
