OXFORD, Ohio - Miami University President David Hodge announced today that Director of Athletics Brad Bates has accepted the same position at Boston College.

"Brad Bates has always upheld the highest standards of integrity and the highest expectations for our student-athletes, coaches, and staff," said Hodge. "He has been relentless in pushing the vision that all Miami student athletes should graduate and graduate with at least one championship ring. He has been an exceptionally articulate spokesperson on behalf of Miami values and ambitions. He will be greatly missed, and we wish him well in his new position."

A progressive and driving force behind Miami University's athletic department since his arrival in November of 2002, Bates has been instrumental in not only upholding Miami's athletic tradition but also ushering Miami athletics into the next generation of intercollegiate athletics. Bates' unique vision of developing a Culture of Champions both on and off the field has made Miami Athletics a model for intercollegiate athletic programs.

During the past 10 years, Bates has presided over a program that achieved back-to-back football bowl game appearances for the first time in nearly 30 years while earning conference championships in football, women's cross country, ice hockey, baseball, men's and women's basketball, volleyball, men's and women's swimming, field hockey, women's soccer, women's tennis, softball and synchronized skating. The time period also included Miami's first-ever Frozen Four and national championship appearance in ice hockey.

"Michele and I will always cherish our years in Oxford, especially the tremendous Miami University family," said Bates. "We are eternally grateful for the friendships that have been developed with students, faculty, administration, staff, coaches and Miami alumni. We will always support and follow the RedHawks. Miami is an extraordinary institution and we know the Culture of Champions will continue to be a vision that inspires excellence long into the future."

Bates has spearheaded efforts to improve the "athletic classrooms," which include a new softball field, a state-of-the-art ice center for the ice hockey and synchronized skating programs, a renovated field hockey complex, and significant improvements to Yager Stadium. Recently, Miami announced plans to enhance its McKie Field at Hayden Park with a new locker room, lounge and coaches' offices.

Academically, during Bates' tenure, Miami's student-athletes have consistently improved Federal Graduation and Graduation Success Rates to 72% to 79%, the highest percentage of any Mid-American Conference institution. During the same period, the Graduation Success Rate of Miami Student-Athletes was 83% to 90%, also among the best in the Mid-American Conference. The Athletic Department's Federal Graduation and Graduation Success Rates consistently rank among the highest within all public, Division 1 FBS institutions.

President Hodge announced that a national search for a new Director of Athletics will be conducted.
