NASHVILLE, Tenn. - Facing a talented field with nationally ranked teams and seven SEC foes, the Miami University men's cross country team churned out a strong showing to earn second place Saturday morning at the Commodore Classic, hosted by Vanderbilt at Percy Ward Park.

Running their first 8K of the year, the RedHawks totaled 83 points, finishing only behind No. 27 Eastern Kentucky, who captured the team title with 32 points. Tennessee was the top finisher out of the SEC, claiming third with 121 points while No. 30 Georgia was fourth with 173 points. Mississippi State, also of the SEC, took fifth with 183 points while Cincinnati was sixth with 184 points. A total of 24 teams competed in the meet.

After placing second for both Miami and overall in his first race as a RedHawk, redshirt senior transfer Steve Kiplagat (Iten, Kenya) was Miami's top scorer Saturday, finishing fifth in a time of 24:47.34. Senior Jarrod Eick (Hartville, Ohio), who won the season-opening Flyer 5K Challenge, was the RedHawks' second finisher, crossing in 11th place in 25:00.85. Eick held the lead during the race but was unable to hold off the competition down the stretch.

Junior Dave Wing (Naperville, Ill.) placed 20th for the Red and White, clocking a time of 24:14.28 as the team's third scorer. Sophomore Daniel Garleb (Pickerington, Ohio) ran a time of 25:18.21 to finish 23rd while freshman Joe Stewart (Naperville, Ill.) notched a time of 25:32.70 to finish in 29th place in his first collegiate race and round out the RedHawk scorers.

Two others finished among the top 35 with junior Matt Marol (Evanston, Ill.) recording a time of 25:34.21 and senior Brett Wagner (Toledo, Ohio) turning in a time of 25:37.18 to place 32nd and 34th, respectively. In total, 11 RedHawks ran in the Commodore Classic.

After taking next weekend off, the RedHawks return to action Saturday, Sept. 29 at the All-Ohio Championship in Cedarville, Ohio.
