Quotes Miami vs. Tennessee
KNOXVILLE, Tenn. – The Miami University softball team shocked fifth-ranked and no. 7 national seed Tennessee, 1-0, in the opening round of the Knoxville Regional on Friday. Senior pitcher Jessica Simpson kept the Lady Volunteer bats in check, limiting them to only five hits. Miami improves to 41-18 on the season, while Tennessee falls to 46-11.
The RedHawks advance to the winner’s bracket game against Virginia Tech on Saturday at 1:30 p.m. The winner of that game will advance to Sunday’s championship game with the undefeated advantage, while the loser will have to face an elimination game later Saturday at 6:30 p.m.
Simpson was in control the entire game. She allowed no more than one baserunner in any inning, and no Lady Vol runner advanced past second base. Simpson finished the day with six strikeouts.
The defense made several nice plays behind Simpson, including a snag of a liner in the bottom of the first by second baseman Kristy Arbour. She then threw to second to complete a double play.
Miami would get the only run it needed in the top of the first. Kirstie Fehrenbach led off the game with a chopper that got over the third baseman. Jordan McElroy and Shanyn McIntyre followed with groundouts, each would move Fehrenbach up a base. Daniela Torres came up and would hit a single to center field that allowed Fehrenbach to score.
It was important that Miami got that run home early, as Tennessee starting pitcher Ivy Renfroe would not allow a single RedHawk baserunner the remainder of the game.
This victory was the second NCAA Tournament win in school history. The last time Miami won in the NCAA Tournament was May 16, 2009, a 5-4 win over Cleveland State.
