COLORADO SPRINGS, Colo. – Miami sophomore defenseman Matthew Caito (Coto de Caza, Calif./Dubuque (USHL)) was named the National Collegiate Hockey Conference’s Defenseman of the Week, the league office announced on Monday.
Caito recorded his first multi-point game of the season in Miami’s 6-1 win at Colorado College on Saturday night. After falling behind 1-0 in the first period, Caito assisted on the RedHawks’ tying power play goal. He also added a power play goal of his own in the second period, his second of the year. His play helped MU post a resurgent special teams performance that night as the Red and White went 4-for-5 on the power play and killed off all five Tiger power plays.
This is the first time Caito has won the weekly NCHC award this season. He leads the MU blue line with 11 points (2g, 9a).
Miami is idle this week, but returns to the ice for a home series against Western Michigan that begins on Feb. 7.
