CEDARVILLE, Ohio – For a fourth consecutive meet, senior Dave Wing finished as the top scorer for the Miami University men’s cross country team at the All-Ohio Championship this afternoon. Hosted by Cedarville University at the Elvin R. King Cross Country Course, the RedHawks finished third overall with 119 points.

The RedHawks faced a field of 40 Ohio teams, including Mid-American Conference (MAC) rivals Akron, Kent State and Bowling Green. Miami’s 119 points earned it a third-place finish, falling to Akron and Malone. Akron won the 8K with 83 points, while Malone went runner-up with a total of 103 points.

Continuing as Miami’s top finisher this season, Wing took second overall in the meet behind Cedarville’s Matt Brooker in 25:03.56. While second overall, he was the top finisher from the Division 1 schools present at the meet. Senior Matt Marol finished five spots behind Wing in seventh, finishing as Miami’s second scorer in 25:25.27.

Despite a crowded 289-runner field, Wing and Marol had no trouble getting out in front and sticking with the top group of runners throughout the race.

“They got out very well, and they were never out of the lead pack,” head coach Warren Mandrell said. “When they finally got to the 400-meter mark and it narrowed down, they were both in the top ten and that’s where they stayed.”

Freshman Stephen Biebelhausen also had a strong race, taking third for the RedHawks and 17th overall in 25:45.83. Sophomore Matt Stewart then came in as Miami’s fourth scorer in 26:10.30, earning a 32nd overall finish in the meet.

Junior Daniel Garleb was Miami’s fifth and final scorer, taking 61st overall in 26:45.78. While still managing to score for the RedHawks, Garleb struggled throughout the race and finished 38 spots behind his 23rd-place finish from last season's All-Ohio Championship.

"He was our fourth man last week, and like I said, last year he got 23rd and this year he was 61st and that’s a lot of difference," Mandrell said. "The difference between winning and not winning, anyway.”

Although not scoring for the RedHawks, freshman Kent Ford was Miami’s sixth finisher in 26:55.62, taking 75th overall, while sophomore Ryan Moncrieff was the team’s final finisher, taking 187th overall in 29:05.21.

In the All-Ohio Championship’s open division race, Miami alumnus Jarrod Eick took second overall in 25:39.60. Sophomore Matthew Pelletier was fifth in 26:19.10, while freshman Patrick Santino finished seventh in 26:32.50.

Sophomore Joe Stewart then took 11th in 26:49.30, followed by sophomore Ed Wington who finished 23rd in 27:09.40. Freshman Vince Moeglin finished two seconds behind Wington, taking 24th in 27:11.10.

The remaining RedHawks who ran in the open division include freshmen Matthew Dietrich, Andrew Dusing, Brian Brennan, sophomore Zack McBride and junior James Kraus.

The RedHawks will have another week off from competition to prepare for Pre-Nationals Saturday, Oct. 19 in Terre-Haute, Ind. The race will begin at 11 a.m.
