OXFORD, Ohio – After impressive individual performances for their teams last weekend, junior runner Jess Hoover and senior punter Zac Murphy are Miami’s Athletes of the Week connected by Frontier Communications for the week of Sept. 16-22.
Hoover (Hilliard, Ohio) was the RedHawks’ top finisher for the third time in as many weeks. Finishing sixth at the Wake Forest Invitational against some nationally-ranked runners, Hoover paced Miami to a third-place team finish. It was the team’s first 6K race of the season, and Hoover clocked a time of 21:19.60.
This is the second time this season and third time in her career Hoover has been named the Miami Female Athlete of the Week. She previously earned the honor two weeks ago, and won it last year for the week of Sept. 10-16.
Murphy (Cincinnati, Ohio) had eight punts for an average of 52.4, including an 84-yard bomb, the longest in Miami history and the longest in Yager Stadium history, in a 14-0 loss to Cincinnati. His 84-yard boot is tied for fourth-longest in Mid-American Conference history. He was honored as the Mid-American Conference East Division Special Teams Player of the Week on Monday.
This is the first time in Murphy’s career he has been named Miami’s Male Athlete of the Week.
Hoover and the cross country team return to action on Oct. 4 when they run in the All-Ohio Championship. Murphy and the football team travel to Illinois Saturday for a non-conference game beginning at noon.
