OXFORD, Ohio – With no women’s sports competing last week, the lone Miami Athlete of the Week connected by Frontier Communications for the week of May 13-19 is sophomore outfielder Matt Honchel, after leading Miami Baseball to a series win to close the regular season.
Honchel (Harrodsburg, Ky.) batted .538 as the RedHawks won two of three games over rival Ohio to clinch the No. 5 seed at the Mid-American Conference Tournament. He had seven hits in 13 at-bats in the series and scored five runs while driving in another. Three of his seven hits went for extra bases (two doubles and a triple), giving him a slugging percentage of .846. Honchel also walked twice for an on-base percentage of .600 and was successful on his only steal attempt of the weekend. The 2012 MAC Freshman of the Year was perfect in five fielding chances, as well, for a 1.000 fielding percentage. After going 1-for-3 in Thursday's series opener, Honchel had three hits in each of the next two contests. He now has 23 multiple-hit games in 53 contests this season and has had three or more hits eight times. In all three of his leadoff (first inning) at-bats over the weekend, he reached base and scored to give Miami a 1-0 lead.
Honchel has now earned Miami Male Athlete of the Week twice in his career, however this is the first time this season he has claimed the honor, collecting it for the first time as a freshman. He is the sixth different baseball player to be recognized as Miami Male Athlete of the Week this year.
Honchel and the rest of the RedHawks baseball team travels to Avon, Ohio this week for the MAC Tournament at All Pro Freight Stadium. Miami opens with fourth-seeded Ball State on Wednesday at 9 a.m. and will face either top-seeded Kent State or eighth-seeded Central Michigan on Thursday in the double-elimination tournament, which runs through Saturday.
