OXFORD, Ohio – Leading their respective teams to Mid-American Conference road victories over the weekend, the Miami Athletes of the Week connected by Frontier Communications for the week of March 25-31 are junior catcher Kayla Ledbetter for the women and sophomore pitcher Nathan Williams on the men’s side.
Ledbetter (Gahanna, Ohio) had a fantastic week by going 10-for-15 at the plate with eight RBI and six runs scored in four games to open MAC play. Among her hits were two doubles, a triple and two home runs, giving her a slugging percentage of 1.333 for the week. She also drew a walk and was hit by a pitch for an on-base percentage of .706. Ledbetter was perfect during the doubleheader sweep of Toledo on Friday, finishing 7-for-7 with six RBI and six runs scored. She hit a home run in each game, driving in two runs in the opener and four in the nightcap. Against Bowling Green on Saturday she had another three hits, driving in a run in each game.
Ledbetter has now earned Miami Female Athlete of the Week twice in her career with both times coming in the last seven weeks. She was also named MAC East Division Player of the Week on Monday for her efforts, the fourth such award of her career and second this season.
Williams (San Diego, Calif.) threw his first career complete game on Sunday, pitching Miami to a series victory over Toledo. The right-handed hurler limited the Rockets to four hits in the 4-1 win, while two of the hits came in the same inning -- a triple and double with two outs in the third inning. He retired the final 13 batters he faced, plus four before that if you factor in a hit that was erased by a double play. Williams walked three and struck out three to pick up this third win in his last four decisions. For the season, he is 3-1 with a 3.44 ERA. He has started in five of his seven appearances, totaling 36.2 innings. Williams stands second on the team with 21 strikeouts and is holding opponents to a .231 batting average.
The Miami Male Athlete of the Week honor is the first of Williams’ career while he is the third straight baseball player to claim the honor with a different RedHawk winning each time.
Ledbetter leads the softball team back into action today (Tuesday) as the RedHawks host Butler for a doubleheader beginning at 4:30 p.m. The softball team also hosts Western Michigan in a MAC doubleheader Friday at 1 p.m. before playing Northern Illinois on Saturday and Sunday. Williams and the baseball team are back at the park Wednesday at Ohio State at 6:35 p.m. before playing a weekend series at Akron Friday to Sunday.
