CINCINNATI - Three RedHawks earned individual event victories Saturday to lead the Miami University women's track and field team to a third-place finish at the Oliver Nikoloff Open at the University of Cincinnati's Gettler Stadium. Three RedHawk throwers also competed at the Missouri Relays Saturday in Columbia, Mo., as the team was split for the weekend.
The RedHawks totaled 92 points at the Nikoloff Open while the host Bearcats ran away with the meet title, compiling 200 points. Local rival Dayton was the runner-up with 121.5 points. Marquette was fourth with 85 points while Robert Morris (PA) claimed fifth with 57 points. Fellow local rival Wright State was sixth with 39 points in the 17-team field.
Senior Katie Lenahan (Cincinnati, Ohio) won the 800m run in 2:11.46 while junior Maggie Bingham (Carmel, Ind.) was victorious in the 3000m steeplechase in 11:02.02, each earning 10 points for Miami. Junior Diona Graves (Fenton, Mo.) was the runner-up in the 200m dash in a wind-aided personal-best 24.16, which ranks second all-time at Miami.
In the long jump, senior Magda Wikar (Winnetka, Ill.) took first with a season-best leap of 18-4.5/5.60m while freshman Hope Alexander (Wilmington, Del.) was the runner-up in the triple jump with a distance of 37-6/11.43m while junior Krista Stillson (Naperville, Ill.) was fourth with a leap of 36-8.25/11.18m.
Sophomore Katie Scannell (Cortland, Ohio) placed third in the 400m dash in 57.39 while junior Rachael Clay (Rossford, Ohio) crossed in sixth in 58.09. In the 100m hurdles, sophomore Layne Baggett (Pittsburgh, Pa.) finished third in 14.34.
Freshman Ariel Johnson (Cincinnati, Ohio), Baggett, Scannell and Graves combined for a runner-up finish in the 4x100m relay in 47.02. The `Hawks also took second in the 4x400m relay as Clay, senior Ruth Rasch (Bellbrook, Ohio), freshman Tasha Profit (Chicago, Ill.) clocked a time of 3:55.23.
At the Missouri Relays, junior Alexandra Roberts (Hilliard, Ohio) placed third in the shot put, but was the top collegiate finisher behind a pair of unattached throwers, with an outdoor personal-best heave of 48-11.5/14.92m, which is the second-best throw in school history. Fellow junior Samantha Gable (Greenfield, Ind.) was sixth in the shot put (45-5/13.84m). Roberts was also fifth in the discus with a personal-best toss of 149-11/45.71m, which ranks her fifth in school history.
The RedHawks reunite in Oxford next weekend to host the first of two home meets this year in the 26th annual Miami Invitational, April 8-9 at George Rider Track.
