ATHENS, Ohio – The RedHawk softball team completed its opening weekend Mid-American Conference road trip on winning note defeating Ohio, 3-0, on Sunday. Miami improves to 16-12 overall and 2-2 in the MAC. The Bobcats fall to 12-16 overall and 1-3 in the MAC.
Junior pitcher Jessica Simpson earned her eighth shutout of the year, and is only three away from tying Kristy Burch’s 1990 Miami record of 11 shutouts in a season. Simpson allowed eight hits on the day, but only twice allowed an Ohio runner to reach third base. Both times it happened there were two outs and Simpson would retire the next batter on a groundout. She is now 14-8 on the season.
Jenna McGivney got Miami on the board with one swing of the bat in the top of the fourth inning. After Taylor Rice got on base with a single to centerfield, McGivney sent a blast over the leftfield wall to make it 2-0. It was her team leading third home run of the year.
The RedHawks added some insurance with a run in the top of the sixth. With one out, Allie Larrabee doubled to leftfield and was replaced by pinch runner Brandi Hernandez. Rice then immediately followed with a double to right center that brought home Hernandez and made it 3-0.
Rice finished the day 2-for-3 with one RBI and one run scored. McGivney was 1-for-3 with two RBI and one run scored.
Miami returns to action on Wednesday when it hosts IPFW for a non-conference game at 1:30 p.m.
