BLOOMINGTON, Ind. - Competing for the final time in 2011, two throwers on the Miami University men’s track and field team threw the discus Saturday at the NCAA East Preliminary Round, held at Indiana University’s Haugh Track & Field Complex, looking to advance to the NCAA Championships.
Junior Nathan Hoch (Logan, Ohio) finished 37th with a heave of 48.13m/157-11 while freshman Rob Stein (Villa Park, Ill.) was 44th with a toss of 42.17m/138-4 in the 48-man field. Hoch qualified 36th with a heave of 52.58m/172-6, which he threw at the MAC Championships two weekends ago, while Stein entered 43rd with a throw of 51.98m/170-6, which he recorded May 6 at the Billy Hayes Invitational.
Kentucky’s Colin Boevers won the discus with a throw of 57.49m/188-7 while the top 12 finishers advance to the NCAA Championships, which are hosted by Drake University and held June 8-11 in Des Moines, Iowa. With neither Hoch nor Stein placing in the top 12, Miami’s 2011 track season is now over.
Two other RedHawks also competed at the NCAA East Prelims over the weekend as senior Adam Ruiz (Mascoutah, Ill.) threw the shot put Thursday, but fouled on all three of his attempts, and junior Matt Rudin (Middleburg Heights, Ohio) tied for 28th in the pole vault on Friday. Neither advanced however as the top 12 finishers in each event at the East and West Preliminary Rounds move on to the NCAA Championships.
