BLOOMINGTON, Ind. - The first of four members of the Miami University men’s track and field team to qualify for the NCAA East Preliminary Rounds, held at Indiana University’s Haugh Track and Field Complex, took his shot at earning a spot in the NCAA Championships as senior Adam Ruiz competed in the shot put Thursday afternoon.
Ruiz (Mascoutah, Ill.) fell short in his attempt to advance to the next round as he fouled on all three of his throws, failing to record a mark. He entered the prelims ranked 42nd of the 48 competitors who qualified with his personal-best toss of 16.93m/55-6.5 from the MAC Championships.
Auburn’s Stephen Saenz took first in the shot put East Prelims with a heave of 19.82m/65-0.5 while Buffalo’s Robert Golabek was second, throwing 19.41m/63-8.25. The top 12 finishers in the East Prelims advance to the NCAA Championships June 8-11 in Des Moines, Iowa.
The RedHawk men still have three more competitors left at the NCAA East Prelims as junior Matt Rudin vaults in the pole vault Friday at 6 p.m. while junior Nathan Hoch and freshman Rob Stein each throw in the discus Saturday at 5 p.m. The top 12 finishers in each event at the East and West Preliminary Rounds then move on to the NCAA Championships, which are hosted by Drake University from June 8-11.
