CLEVELAND, Ohio -- Miami senior Anastasia Dracheva has been named Mid-American Conference Player of the Week, the league office announced today. The award is the third of the year for the native of Moscow, Russia.
Dracheva improved her record to 19-3 overall in dual matches (8-0 MAC) with a perfect 4-0 week, helping Miami clinch its third straight undefeated MAC regular-season championship.
She played No. 2 single against Akron on Friday, defeating Angelina Jogasuria 6-4, 6-3, then moved up to No. 1 for the Buffalo match, cruising past Diana Popescu 6-0, 6-2. Dracheva teamed with Cara Wald for doubles wins by scores of 8-2 vs. Akron and 8-3 vs. Buffalo. The doubles point each day went to Miami 2-1, with Dracheva and Wald breaking a 1-1 tie vs. Akron.
Dracheva will likely become Miami's first four-time all-conference selection on Thursday night at the annual awards banquet. The top-seeded RedHawks open defense of their 2009 and 2010 MAC titles on Friday morning at 10 a.m. They face the winner of Thursday's first-round match between No. 8 Ball State and No. 9 Northern Illinois.
