BLOOMINGTON, Ind. - For the first time since 2008, Miami University's women's track and field team will be represented at the NCAA Outdoor Track & Field Championships as freshman Tori Paterra finished in the top 12 in the javelin at the NCAA East Preliminary Round Friday at Indiana University's Haugh Track & Field Complex. In doing so, she clinched a berth in the NCAA Championships where the top 24 javelin throwers will go for a national title.
Paterra (Elizabeth, Pa.), the school record holder in the javelin, fired a throw of 47.36m/155-4, which earned her seventh place and ranks fourth-best in school history. She qualified fourth in the region with her school-record heave of 49.91m/163-9, which she recorded in the season-opening Vanderbilt Black & Gold Invitational. Penn State's Karlee McQuillen won the javelin with a toss of 52.48m/172-2.
"Although not her best series of the spring, it was still good enough to make it to the final round," head coach Ross Richardson has done a fantastic job with the throwers this year and it will be exciting to see all of the throwers next year after a full year under his guidance."
The last RedHawk to earn a spot at the NCAA Championships was Kristina Bolterstein in 2008, when she earned All-American honors and finished eighth in the high jump. Paterra will compete in the javelin at the NCAA Championships on Thursday, June 9 at 3:05 p.m.
Junior Alexandra Roberts (Hilliard, Ohio) also competed at the East Prelims Friday, doing so for a second straight year, placing 34th in the shot put with a heave of 14.62m/47-11.75 in her final outing of the season. She finished second of the five Mid-American Conference athletes in the competition. Roberts qualified 33rd with her school-record heave of 15.20m/49-10.5, which she threw April 9 at the Miami Invitational. Indiana's Faith Sherrill won with the East Prelim with a throw of 17.51m/57-5.5.
The top 12 finishers in each event from the East and West Preliminary Round advance to the NCAA Championships, hosted by Drake University, June 8-11 in Des Moines, Iowa. Roberts has another chance to earn an NCAA berth Saturday at 11 a.m. as she throws the discus while redshirt junior Rachel Patterson runs in the 5000m at 8:05 p.m.
