TOLEDO – Miami continued its winnings ways, rolling to an 8-2 win over Toledo on Sunday. It was the seventh consecutive win for the RedHawks, who improve to 28-18 overall and 11-7 in the Mid-American Conference. The Rockets fall to 8-35 overall and 3-13 in the MAC.
The RedHawks will head into the final week of the regular season in front in the MAC East Division. With their 11-7 conference record they are slightly in front of Ohio (9-7) and Kent State (8-7).
Junior Jessica Simpson improved her record to 23-12 with the complete game victory. She allowed only two third-inning runs on nine hits, while giving up zero walks. She struck out nine.
Meghan Mawn’s first home run of the season in the top of the second put Miami in front 1-0 early. After the Rockets took the 2-1 in the third, the RedHawks tied the game up with a run in the fourth. With two outs Jordan McElroy drew a walk. Taylor Rice followed with a double to left center that brought her home.
Miami took the lead for good with two runs in the top of the fifth inning. Kathryn Russette would score her.
The game was broke open with four runs in the top of the sixth. McElroy and Rice led off the inning with back-to-back singles. Kristy Arbour moved each of them up a base with a sacrifice bunt. Torres walked to load the bases with one out. An error by the Rocket’s pitcher would allow Rice and McElroy to score and make it 6-2. After a pitching change, a groundout by Allie Larrabee would bring in Torres. Mawn would complete Miami’s scoring with a single to left field to score Fehrenbach.
Rice finished the day 4-for-4 with one RBI and one run scored. Mawn was 3-for-4 with two RBI and one run scored. Fehrenbach was 2-for-4 with one RBI and two runs scored.
The RedHawks will be busy hosting four games over graduation weekend. On Friday, Miami welcomes Northern Illinois to town for a doubleheader starting at 1 p.m. On Saturday, the RedHawks host Western Michigan at a special start time of 6 p.m. due to the graduation ceremony. The regular season concludes with senior day against the Broncos on Sunday at 1 p.m. Seniors Mawn, Russette and Jenna McGivney will be honored in a pregame ceremony.
