OXFORD, Ohio—Miami University announced the hiring of Coleman Barnes as Senior Director of Development and Associate Athletics Director.
Barnes comes to Oxford from the University of Alabama at Birmingham (UAB), where he spent the previous two years as the Associate Athletics Director for Development. Barnes oversaw Blazer Boosters, the fundraising unit for UAB Athletics, increasing the annual fund membership by 54 percent through a 16-month initiative. Barnes also successfully promoted a culture of philanthropy as 31 percent of the existing donor base increased their contributions through new philanthropic giving programs, helping lead to an 8 percent increase in revenues.
"The Miami University Family welcomes Coleman and we are very excited about what he brings to the table,” said Miami University Athletics Director David Sayler. “As Miami Athletics heads toward a capital campaign, it is critical to surround our development team with talented individuals who can work to secure major gifts while also growing our annual Red & White fund. We have full confidence that Coleman will assist us in a big way in regard to achieving our significant fundraising goals."
In addition to working on the campaign, Barnes will oversee the day-to-day operations of the athletic development office and its staff and will serve as the liaison between Intercollegiate Athletics and University Advancement.
"I look forward to working with Coleman and welcoming him to the Advancement Family at Miami,” said Senior Associate Vice President Brad Bundy. “We are impressed with the breadth of his experience, and look forward to having that experience result in increased support for Miami Athletics."
"It is a privilege to work at Miami University, one of America’s most elite public universities,” said Barnes. “I look forward to visiting with alumni and friends in an effort to enhance the student-athlete experience and win championships.”
Prior to UAB, Barnes served as the Executive Director of The Bulldog Foundation and Associate Athletics Director for Development for Fresno State (2008-2011). As an executive administrator, Barnes oversaw all components of the development office that raised approximately $6 million annually. He also managed a development team that successfully secured funding for a $6 million sports medicine center and a $1.2 million turf project.
From 2005-2008, Barnes served as the Assistant Director for the UMAA Foundation, the fundraising unit for Ole Miss Athletics, playing an integral role in raising nearly $13 million annually. Prior to Ole Miss, Barnes was a Development Associate for the Hurricane Club at the University of Miami (2004-2005) and an intern in the Harvard University Athletics Ticket Office (2003-2004).
Barnes graduated with a Bachelor of Arts in Education from the University of Kentucky in 2002 with a major in kinesiology and a minor in business. He was also a three-year letterwinner as the long snapper on the football team. In 2004, Barnes earned a Master of Science in Kinesiology with an emphasis in sport management from the Kentucky.
A native of Bardstown, Ky., Barnes resides in Oxford with his wife, the former Mary Beth Justice of Madison, Miss., and their children, Caroline and William.
