OXFORD, Ohio - After both had career-best weekends, the Miami Athletes of the Week connected by Frontier Communications for the week of Jan. 28 to Feb. 3 are sophomore distance runner Anna Lamb on the women's side and hockey freshman forward Kevin Morris on the men's side.
Lamb (Granville, Ohio) had a stellar performance at the Akron Invitational Friday night as she won the gold division (top tier) 5000m run in a personal-best 17:04.68, which ranks her fourth in school history and is the fastest time by a RedHawk in the event since 2011. Her time is also the fastest 5K time in the MAC so far this year and ranks 49th nationally while she also automatically qualified for the MAC Championships in the event. The win was the first of her collegiate career, beating out a field of 24 that included runners from Kent State, Marshall, Bowling Green, Akron, IPFW, Florida Atlantic and others. She won the race by a whopping 12 seconds ahead of the runner-up, also from Miami, while improving on her previous-best 5K time by nearly 20 seconds.
The Miami Female Athlete of the Week honor is the first of Lamb's career while she is also the first track and field athlete to claim the distinction this season.
Morris (Massena, N.Y.) had the best weekend of his young career as he helped the RedHawks sweep Alaska. The rookie totaled four points on the weekend after entering the weekend with a total of four points (3g, 1a) all season (26 games), including none since Dec. 7. Morris had two goals and assists each with a +4 rating in two games against the Nanooks. In Friday's 4-1 win, he dished out an assist on the game-winning goal and had a +1 rating. In Saturday's 6-2 win, Morris totaled a career-high three points on two goals and an assist. It was his first multi-goal game as a RedHawk and his first collegiate multi-point game. Morris' first goal Saturday was the game-winning goal as he broke a 2-2 tie in the second period with a hard wrister and Miami never trailed again. He was named the game's No. 1 star Saturday while putting five shots on goal and posting a +3 rating, as well.
Morris also claimed Miami Male Athlete of the Week for the first time in his short career. He is the eighth different hockey player to claim the honor this season.
Lamb and the rest of the women's track and field team are back in action this weekend as they compete at the Hoosier Hills Invitational, hosted by Indiana University in Bloomington, Ind. on Friday and Saturday. Morris and the No. 3 Miami hockey team return to the ice this weekend as well for a CCHA showdown at No. 6 Western Michigan Friday and Saturday in a battle of the league's top two teams. Puck drop is 7:05 p.m. both nights.
