OXFORD, Ohio - To commemorate the 40th anniversary of Title IX-the landmark Supreme Court decision that paved the way for women's intercollegiate athletics-the Miami University Athletic Department is co-sponsoring "Celebrating 40 Years of Title IX" with the Miami University Women's Center the weekend of Oct. 5-6. There are several events scheduled for this celebration, and the public is invited to take part in this special weekend.
On Friday Oct. 5, three-time Olympic gold medalist swimmer Nancy Hogshead-Makar will present a lecture entitled "The Personal, Political and Practical of Title IX." The presentation is free and open to the public and will begin at 3:30 p.m. in room 1000 of the Farmer School of Business. Hogshead-Makar is a Professor of Law at the Florida Coastal School of Law and is the Senior Director of Advocacy for the Women's Sports Foundation.
On Saturday, Oct. 6, Miami will host the "Luncheon with the Legends." This will take place at the Marcum Conference Center from 11 a.m.-1 p.m. and features a panel discussion of Miami Hall-of-Famers, current athletic staff and faculty and other notable Miami alumnae. Several Miami women's teams also will be in action over that weekend. On Friday, Oct. 5, the soccer team takes on Western Michigan at 4 p.m. On Saturday, Oct. 6, field hockey faces Kent State at noon while the volleyball team takes on Northern Illinois at 5 p.m. On Sunday, Oct. 7, both field hockey and soccer will be in action at 1 p.m. against Indiana and Eastern Michigan respectively. At the conclusion of Sunday's field hockey contest, there will be a free Mother-Daughter clinic to learn more about the exciting and unique sport.
