It’s the second week of school and the fall sports season is officially in full swing. In case you missed anything last week, listed below is a recap of events as well as a look ahead at this week’s games. Enjoy!
This week: It’s finally game week for the Miami football team, as it prepares to play The Ohio State University in the season opener Saturday, Sept. 1 at noon (EDT) in Columbus. The game will be telecast on the Big Ten Network. The Buckeyes are ranked No. 18 in the Preseason AP Top 25 Poll. Season tickets are still available starting at just $70. To order, call 513-529-4295.
Last Week: The Miami women’s soccer team (3-1-0) sustained its first loss of the season against Northwestern University, 2-1, Friday night at Miami Soccer Field in Oxford (RECAP). RedHawks junior Katy Dolesh scored in the first half to put the hosts up a goal, but the Wildcats (2-1-0) rallied to win the game with a late goal in the 82nd minute. Northwestern was the first Big Ten team to visit Oxford since 2008. On Sunday, Miami freshman Haley Walter scored a pair of goals in a heavy rain to lead the RedHawks past the University of Wisconsin Milwaukee, 4-2, at Engelmann Stadium in Milwaukee (RECAP). Miami senior captain Jess Kodiak, who was named the Mid-American Conference’s Offensive Player of the Week, scored on a corner kick in the 13th minute to go up 1-0, but the Panthers (1-2-1) responded with two goals, one just before halftime, and the other 33 seconds after the break to take a 2-1 lead. But Miami sophomore Hailey Pleshakov scored in the 49th minute to tie the game and Walter put the contest away tallying her first goals of her young career in the 65th and 82nd minutes. This week: The RedHawks head south to Nashville, Tenn. to take on Belmont Sunday, Sept. 2 at 3 p.m. (EDT)
Last Week: The Miami field hockey team opened its season with a pair of losses to Northwestern University and the University of Louisville on Saturday and Sunday, respectively, at the Sherrill Brakmeier Classic in Louisville, Ky. Against Northwestern, Olivia Miller led the team with three shots in the 3-0 loss (RECAP). The following day vs. Louisville, Sarah Mueller had a career day recording 14 saves, but it wasn’t enough as the RedHawks fell to 23rd-ranked Cardinals, 3-1, to conclude the tournament (RECAP). This week: Miami (0-2) returns to action when it heads to East Lansing, Mich. for a pair of contests. The RedHawks will take on their third straight ranked opponent when they face 11th-ranked Stanford Saturday, Sept. 1 at 4 p.m. Miami will then play host Michigan State Sunday, Sept. 2 at 4 p.m.
Last Week: Miami head volleyball coach Carolyn Condit received her 500th career victory last weekend during the team’s season opening tournament. The veteran coach is now 500-385 in 28-plus seasons with the Red and White. The RedHawks played three games in the Thunder Invitational in Huntington, W. Va. Miami dropped its season opener to IUPUI 3-1 Friday (RECAP), but followed up with a 3-0 victory Saturday against Wright State (RECAP). Miami wrapped up the tournament with a 3-2 loss to Marshall (RECAP). This week: The RedHawks (1-2) return to action this weekend when they travel to Minneapolis for the Diet Coke Classic. On Friday, Aug. 31, Miami plays Albany at 6 p.m. (EDT). On Saturday, Sept. 1, the RedHawks face the host, 16th-ranked Minnesota at 11 a.m. (EDT) and finish the event against LIU-Brooklyn at 6 p.m. (EDT).
Last Week: The Miami ice hockey’s second annual Pro Camp saw 20 former players return to Oxford for a week of training and workouts last week (RELEASE). Attendance was up seven players from a year ago. The most notable attendees were 2012 Stanley Cup Champion Alec Martinez (Class of '09) of the Los Angeles Kings, New Jersey Devils defenseman Andy Greene ('06), Edmonton Oilers forward Ryan Jones ('08), San Jose Sharks forward Tommy Wingels ('11) and Andy Miele ('11) of the Phoenix Coyotes. This week: The 2012-13 season is still more than a month away. The RedHawks start with an exhibition game Sunday, Oct. 7 against Western Ontario, which will be followed by the team’s season opener vs. Colgate Friday, Oct. 12. Both games will be played at the Goggin Ice Center in Oxford.
Men’s & Women’s Cross Country
The Miami men’s and women’s cross country teams both open their seasons Saturday, Sept. 1 at the Dayton Flyer 5k Challenge in Kettering, Ohio at 10:45 a.m. (EDT)
