With four spring sports teams competing last week—three at their respective MAC Championships—Mother Nature played a factor in every teams’ events last weekend.
For a second straight year, senior golfer Nathan Sutherland received an at-large berth to compete as an individual at an NCAA regional event. Sutherland will compete May 19-21. The regional is hosted by Indiana University and features 14 teams and five others competing as individuals at the Wolf Run Golf Course in Zionsville, Ind. (RELEASE)
Last Week: The RedHawks competed at the MAC Tournament last week in Akron, Ohio. Miami was edged in its opening game by Ohio, 5-4, as the Bobcats scored three runs in the bottom of the seventh inning in the double-elimination tournament on Wednesday. Meghan Mawn was named to the MAC All-Tournament Team. Earlier in the week, Simpson was tabbed the MAC Pitcher of the Year and was a First-Team All-MAC selection. Junior third baseman Kathryn Russette were each named to the All-MAC Second Team, while outfielder Kirstie Fehrenbach was named to the MAC All-Freshman Team. (RELEASE)
Last Week: After splitting a midweek home-and-home series with Cincinnati, Miami (31-21; 17-7) swept a three-game series against Buffalo over the weekend. The Bearcats pulled out a 9-6 win at Marge Schott Stadium on Tuesday evening. Brad Gschwind hit a two-run, walk-off home run in the bottom of the 10th in the opener and Tyler Melling struck out a career-high 11 batters during the nightcap as the RedHawks earned 4-2 and 5-2 victories over Buffalo. Jon Edgington was also honored as the MAC Male Scholar-Athlete of the Week last week. This Week: The RedHawks host Xavier at 1 p.m. Tuesday before rounding out the regular season at Ohio Friday, Saturday and Sunday.

Last Week: Junior Rachel Patterson and freshman Hope Alexander and sophomore Katie Lenahan (1500m) and Alexandra Roberts (shot put) took Second-Team All-MAC plaudits with runner-up finishes Saturday. Upcoming: Several RedHawks are in contention to earn a spot in the NCAA East Preliminary Rounds, hosted by Indiana University, May 26-28. Lenahan in the 800m, Patterson in both the 5K and 10K, Erica Mudd in the high jump, Roberts in the shot put and the discus, Samantha Gable in the hammer throw and Paterra in the javelin are all ranked in the top 48 in the East Region in their respective event(s), which is what qualifies for the Preliminary Rounds. The official field will be announced Thursday, May 19 at 1 p.m. on NCAA.org.
MEN’S TRACK & FIELD
Last Week: The RedHawks finished sixth at the MAC Championships hosted by Northern Illinois last weekend. Michael McCarty posted a second-place finish in the decathlon, while senior Adam Ruiz was the runner up in the shot put. Because of the lost day, all track events were timed finals with no preliminaries and the meet resumed at 8:30 a.m. on Saturday. (RECAP) Two more RedHawks earned runner-up finishes on Saturday. Sophomore Jarrod Eick finished second in the 1500m, while freshman Jahquil Hargrove was the runner-up in the 400m dash. (RECAP) After the meet, Eick (1500m) and Hargrove (400m) were named Second-Team All-MAC with their second-place showings Saturday, while McCarty and Ruiz earned the honor by taking second in the decathlon and shot put, respectively, on Friday. Earlier in the week Eick also was tabbed the MAC Men’s Track Athlete of the Week. The hockey team released its 2011-12 schedule, which features 18 home games. Charlie Coles will be inducted into the Ohio Basketball Hall of Fame this weekend.
Head football coach Don Treadwell and members of his staff will be heading to five locations throughout Ohio and to Chicago to engage with fellow Miami University alumni and fans during the month of June. (RELEASE)
